Change the author to Mahatma Gandhi, Dalhi Llama, Martin Luther King, Jesus or Nazareth, Frederick Douglas, or for those extremists, Mao Tse Tung, Che Guevara, or Adolf Hitler and maybe more people would read this title. All of the above mentioned people spoke of the importance of arms. Insert the author of your choice and then read. Not to say that these people would agree completely with the whole nook, but I know that they would all agree with the ultimate message of keeping and bearing arms for defense.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book is a good read if one has an interest in expanding their view on Constitutional issues that severely impact the lives of all Americans, and how some are trying all they can to destroy our Constitutional freedoms! This book is not just about firearms, but about rights and freedom in general.

Where do I begin? Lapierre makes the usual arguments of the NRA and others of their ilk-- namely, modern day frontiersmen with a Wild West mentality who dream of making contemporary America into a sort of coast to coast Dodge City. There is nothing novel in his assertions that the Second Amendment is sacrosanct and therefore should be immune from any tampering by do-gooder legislators and concerned citizens. Likewise, his attacks upon the Brady Bill are readily predictable. Strangely, where I take issue with him is not in the matter of gun ownership, but rather in his infuriating views about criminal justice. Despite the troubling reality of the fact that the United States incarcerates its citizens at a higher rate than any nation on earth, Lapierre boldly asserts that this country has long been soft on crime and advocates jailing an even higher percentage of the populace. He endorses the prison industrial complex in which private contractors rake in ever larger profits as get-tough-on-crime judges send hapless defendants down the rabbit hole, often for non-violent offenses. He favors incarcerating those guilty merely of drug use, a victimless crime. He would all but abolish parole, believing the convicted deserve no second chances. He would try children as adults in many cases, and would unseal the juvenile records of all youthful offenders to ruin their later lives and prevent them from making a fresh start. He would suspend habeas corpus motions being filed in the courts and would deny to convicts access to law libraries to do research to mount appeals to their convictions. Lastly, and amazingly, he would convert unused military bases into makeshift prisons, thus making the Department of Defense an accessory to his master plan to make this nation into a sort of gulag. One thing is certain: if Mr. Lapierre had his way, the most common occupation in America would be prison guard, since it would take a veritable army of keepers to stand watch over the massive influx of inmates.

An excellent, rational look at the Second Amendment in today's environment. Also has quotes from our founding father's as to why they put the Second Amendment into the Constitution.
