I really enjoyed this vampire hunter story and the twist that makes me want to have more of their adventures. "Guns and Fangs" is a novella length, so a quick read when you don't have time for a full blown adventure. A good clean adventure that can be read by adults and teens alike.
Vanessa lost her mom at a young age to a vampire , which made her yearn to destroy them all and the very reason for her becoming a vampire Huntress , so when she meets Anton a Suave , cunning Vampire who inside hates his "After Life" she still pushes him away even after feeling a connection to him, but when she's in trouble will he get there in time to save her ?
This was a Great Halloween romance read , it's novella size at only 70 pages so you can read it in one sitting , while giving out candy to the kids in the neighborhood .
I loved the characters, the author gave them such an instant connection , you immediately wanted them together despite the fact that they should hate each other .I enjoyed how Anton came to Vanessa's rescue even after she turned him away and there was just enough fright and action within the story to make it satisfying .
Oh, and the blood from her ankle bone sticking out the side of her leg, the clumsy drop to the fire escape having paid her back in spades. As her greatest fear started to become a possibility in the back of her mind, Vanessa looked to pull the knife embedded in his shoulder and turn it on her own neck to avoid being turned. But even in that, it seems her night's failures would continue to grow. Still, tonight was determined to be a night of strangeness and firsts, for not only did he heel the terrible injury to her leg, she offered him a small feed. To replenish what he'd lost, I'm sure that's what she'd convince herself of. Pent up anger and frustration turned out to be the trend of the night, as she'd find out later when she'd go as far as offering the caveat no-no, of inviting him inside.
Anton Cross loathed himself about as much as he loathed having to hurt to survive. The pain of knowing what he must do had created a rarity in his world, a vampire who took only enough to survive, but never enough to be satisfied. As he looked into the essence of the lifeblood from this latests feed, he saw the three thousand two hundred and fifty-nine kills, and knew she was what rumour professed her to be. Not that he wasn't already intrigued, but the obvious fact, now he'd taken some of her blood and knew without doubt that she was all human, remained how could such a weak creature possibly do all that she'd done? Had he known before he'd been turned that both vampires and hunters existed, he might have become the latter himself. Maybe that's what made her so interesting, at least that's what he told himself. Either way, the night was determined to be filled with all kinds of firsts.
The meeting of fates could only be responsible for the immensely serendipitous nature of Vanessa's and Anton's colliding destinies. Both had their lives forever altered by vampires, and yet they could both benefit from their dilemmas if they could only achieve the right frame of mind. Whilst undoubtedly short in length, Guns and Fangs is no worse off for it. Actually, whether its true or not, and given my short examinations on the book from Goodreads and Amazon too, I'm inclined toward the not, but either way this story could undoubtedly serve really well as a great prequel to another huntress style chronicles. A further aspect that isn't nearly as common in vampiric lore is the exposure herein to the nature and perceptions of the negative consequences of being turned. Sure there are mentions throughout the many stories in just paranormal and urban fantasy alone; but first person struggles of newborns and especially in relation to a master with conscience isn't nearly as common as the many wonders that appear regarding increased vampiric abilities.
Regardless of length there still manages to be the full compliment of story structural aspects. There's the interesting wind up introduction, with a body that establishes context and issues revolving around main characters, followed by the finale serving to complete the story. Personally, I tend not to pick up many short stories unless they're the traditional 'something-point-fives' novella within series I'm already reading. Every so often though I find myself in the mood for a quick, and hopefully fulfilling read. It gives me pleasure to note that every so often you can pick up little treasures that serve the aforementioned, and many other purposes.
Having read A Question of Faith by Nicole I figured it'd be a safe bet, given how well my interests responded to that book, so its a pretty good chance that the story herein will do the same for you: and that was certainly the case for me. Its times such as the confirmations I gained with Guns and Fangs, that I am reminded once again why it pays to find authors you can follow. To an extent it can be as, or even more important, to stick with styles you look in lieu of only chasing genre and/or content. Lucky for me, as seen in the opening pages of this book, that Nicole has no shortage of books to read.
