God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy Hardcover – January 20, 2015

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 819 ratings

The New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly bestseller!

In
God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy, Mike Huckabee asks, "Have I been taken to a different planet than the one on which I grew up?" The New York Times bestselling author explores today's fractious American culture, where divisions of class, race, politics, religion, gender, age, and other fault lines make polite conversation dicey, if not downright dangerous. As Huckabee notes, the differences of opinion between the "Bubble-villes" of the big power centers and the "Bubba-villes" where most people live are profound, provocative, and sometimes pretty funny. Where else but in Washington, D.C. could two presidential golf outings cost the American taxpayers $2.9 million in travel expenses?

Government bailouts, politician pig-outs, and popular culture provocations from Jay-Z and Beyoncé to Honey Boo-Boo to the Duck Dynasty's Robertson family. Gun rights, gay marriage, the decline of patriotism, and the mainstream media's contempt for those who cherish a faith-based life. The trouble with Democrats, the even bigger trouble with Republicans, our national security complex, and how our Constitution is eroding under our noses. Stories of everyday Americans surviving tough times, reflections on our way of life as it once was, as it is, and as it might become...these subjects and many more are covered with Mike Huckabee's signature wit, insight, and honesty.

At times lighthearted, at others bracingly realistic, Huckabee's brand of optimistic patriotism highlights American ideals, offering a bright outlook for future generations.

With a wry eye for the ridiculous and a clear-eyed look at the most controversial issues of our time,
God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy is Mike Huckabee at his very best.

"GOD, GUNS, GRITS, AND GRAVY" is a book that is both serious and lighthearted---it's as much about pop culture, country life, and food as it is about politics. Mike Huckabee has a very distinct writing style that is simplistic and full of humor, and that made this a very enjoyable book to read. Mr. Huckabee describes the real contrasts in values, behaviors, and political beliefs between the people of Bubble-ville (the "cultural centers" of America like NYC and LA) and the people of Bubba-ville (the rural heartland of America). For him, Bubba-ville is the land of God, guns, grits, and gravy. Many also call it "flyover country" because the ivory-tower elites of Bubble-ville simply fly over it on their planes; they wouldn't dare to actually drive through and make some stops along the way.

Through discussions of Chick-fil-A and Duck Dynasty, Jay-Z and the Kardashians, Mr. Huckabee gives his takes on some of the cultural issues of today. Some of the Bubble-ville hotspots like LA have contributed to the collapse of our culture into an effective moral vacuum through music, television, and movies. In contrast, the people of Bubba-ville prefer music, movies, and television that promote traditional, faith-based moral values. Whereas the people of Bubble-ville place their faith in secular government, the people of Bubba-ville place their faith in family and community. The people of Bubba-ville are seen as uneducated, uncultured rednecks by the people of Bubble-ville, and part of the reason why Mr. Huckabee wrote this book was to set the record straight on what life is really like outside of the bubble.

The serious portions of this book focus on politics and government policy, again drawing on Mr. Huckabee's life experience in Bubba-ville to make solid points. Our government could do with a bit more common sense, and we could sure help ourselves tremendously by getting back to the principles which our country was founded upon and which made it great. In order to do that, Mr. Huckabee proposes implementing term limits for both the legislative and judicial branches of the federal government, and he makes a passionate case for returning power to the states via the all-but-forgotten about 10th Amendment.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a very fun and easy read, and having come from a rural part of New Jersey that could be described as Bubba-ville, I thought it was a great defense of our way of life. I encourage everyone to read this book, but especially people from Bubble-ville. But be careful, because quite a bit of it might go straight over your heads!

Mike Huckabee's a great writer and a great storyteller. Even if you don't agree with everything he believes and says, Huckabee presents his material in an entertaining way without insulting you. His honest look at how the country he grew up in has regressed is something that resonates with me and all my friends who are over 40. This was one of my favorite lines from the book: "How is it possible that the United States, a nation founded by immigrants who came here seeking more freedom, opportunities and prosperity than they could ever dream of in their native lands, could have fallen behind so many of those nations in those very same areas? [p. 194] This is a thought-provoking book and WELL WORTH THE READ!

Huckabee shows distinctions between the personal freedoms and values cherished by Americans in "Bubbaville" and "Bubbleville." Although his bashing gets a little tiresome, the points he makes and the data he provides accurately reflect conservative life in America. Overall, a good read.

I grew up in the South and feel Mike Huckabee tells it like it is. I have had people act condescending when I politely say Yes Ma'm with a smile, knowing full well that they aren't my superior, but that you just show mutual respect to everyone and it is reciprocated. Some don't understand that concept. Southerners do. It is part of our culture.. our roots. Tolerance for backgrounds and diversity often does not extend to Southerners, who may be viewed as ignorant and backward thinking- not college educated and deeply rooted in their faith. This book resonates with my personal experience as a Southerner having lived my adult life outside the South. Tired of PC that doesn't make sense and is not scriptural? If you are looking for insight into a Southerner's worldview from an authentic Southerner, and not based on biased media sources, then this is the book for you! Funny. Real. Thought provoking. After all, you have to know where you are coming from, in order to know where you are going. Mike Huckabee gets it and is "all in"!

It's so great to read a book that matches with my feelings in almost every way. I have been feeling for quite awhile that it is not the democrats against the republicans but the city people against the country people. There is just such a disconnect there. I doubt that the city people reading this will get it but it sure is nice to be reminded that we are not alone in our small southern town but that there are small towns like ours all over America with people who think and feel just like we do. The only downside is that Huckabee very aptly explained the problems but I just don't see how it can possibly get fixed. Even if he becomes president, it would just be the tip of the ice berg. I sure would like for him to have the chance to fix as much as he could. After reading this book I actually felt like I could invite Mike Huckabee over to our ranch for a steak Sunday dinner and he might actually show up even though the biggest contribution we could make towards his campaign would be our votes. I have recommended this book to all my family and friends.

This book gives me hope for the future. We need to take our country back to the basics set out by the founders of this Great Nation. I am proud to be an American and if everyone took pride in our Nation we might be able to get it back. Mike lays out an intelligent path and if he is not successfully elected as President hopefully whoever is will also think along these lines. I do, however, miss his program on Fox News Network. It was one of the best hours of the weekend.

Great book about the insanity and hypocrisy of those who live in "Bubbleville" especially those in Washington DC. He covers a wide variety of topics and details how he once solved problems as governor (Arkansas 10 years) and what he would do if (when) he becomes president ( of the USA). Not exactly calling for impeachment of the Obama regime, but he certainly "calls a spade a spade" and doesn't pull any punches on where the blame lies with the bloated (Orwellian) federal government and it's many (liberal) excesses ( like Obama spending 2.9 million on two golf outings). The only comment I disagree with is " electricity can't be stored" which although technically true, "electric ENERGY CAN be stored" ( with flywheels, compressed air, pumping water uphill, making hydrogen, using sodium sulfur batteries, etc.). He could have read " Energy for Future Presidents" by Richard Muller to be a bit more informed on this topic. Otherwise , a very pleasant informative read on what ails America and how to cure it.
