From the Manufacturer
GunVault pistol safes are truly premium products that set the standard for the rest of the industry. We know that security and reliability are prevailing priorities when you need our products, and that's why GunVault pistol safes have the features you want. Our Biometric scanner provides lightning-quick access, even in the dark. Improved high strength lock mechanism and precise fittings make it virtually impossible to pry open with hand tools. Battery powered for maximum security and easy portability. The GVB 1000 (MiniVault Bio) uses fingerprint recognition, to access the safe contents. A high-performance algorithm is used to achieve speedy identification of enrolled fingerprints; and at the same time has a very low False Reject rate (FRR) for a given False Accept Rate (FAR). This self-learning algorithm of the GunVault Bio adds new minutiae to the fingerprint templates each time a user touches the finger print sensor, which decreases the likelihood of FRR, updates slight changes that might occur over time to an enrolled fingerprint, as well as to help distinguish variations. The GVB 1000 can handle a maximum of 15 fingerprint templates. The GVB 1000 also comes with an AC/DC Power Adapter, and an interior courtesy light.
There are many times when the finger print scanner takes a good 30 plus tries to even read there is a finger, much less accurately identify my scan. Quick access typically is desired for a home invasion. I wouldn't waste my time with this. I also have a sentry and it is instant with a finger swipe instead of holding finger in place.
AC powered AND battery. Appears to be of strong construction. Comes with *free* corrosion protectant tab to place inside. Completely padded. Spring loaded door. Mountable. A lot of fingerprints can be programmed. Pretty deep.
Inconsistent fingerprint scanner. Very loud door slam noise every time you open the safe (con if you are trying to be quiet during an invasion). Very awkward hand position in order to scan. Instructions don't explain programming a code for this model. Claims to factory reset memory when disconnected from battery and AC power source - Not true (probably best that it is not true, otherwise a thief would only have to unplug and press buttons until they kill the battery to get in.) Sometimes if you press the initiation button to activate the scanner, it beeps, but the scanner does not turn on (Another noise issue if in an invasion scenario).
This is my second gunvault. The first was a biometric safe that never worked. I thought I'd go the safe route and just get the lower complexity electronic locking safe. Same result, doesn't work right out of the box.
I researched biometric gun safes extensively before deciding to purchase this one. Some reviews said that this safe didn't consistently recognize fingerprints. I registered my right index finger a couple of times when I first got the safe and I have successfully opened this safe probably 100 times since then, with only a couple instances where I had to scan twice. The key is to register your fingerprints from a number of different angles.
The fingerprint reader is FAST--faster than my iPhone 5S's fingerprint scanner. I like how the door springs open when unlocked, allowing me to quickly grab my revolver.
The only thing I don't like about the safe is that it makes a loud beeping noise when you unlock it, and there is no way to disable the beep. I initially thought this was a big deal, but if an intruder is in my house, the beep will be shortly followed by my gun and a flashlight being pointed in their face, so a beep a few seconds prior won't matter too much.
While you could fit two handguns in this safe, it can really only fit one comfortably. This safe fits underneath my bed, so my gun is always within arms reach at night. I would highly recommend this safe.
I just received my safe and spent about 45 minutes setting it up and testing the biometric functions. First, the safe is very easy to get set up. Battery installation is easy and programming your fingerprints can be done with very little hassle. The most important feature is the biometric function and my initial impression is that it works okay. I practiced opening it probably 50 times and only had a few errors in the reading. What I noticed is that you have to just be rather careful how you position your finger on the sensor. Once you learn where it likes to read from it was very accurate. The only real glitch I noticed was there is a rather long delay (a few seconds) between a miss-read and a successful re-read. Would I trust this safe if my life were on the line and I only had 5 seconds to react? No! But I don't think I'd trust anything with a battery. That being said, it seems to work great with regards to securing items you don't want people to get in to.
Had my doubts about this safe after reading some of the reviews but it has worked flawlessly for us. Punch in the code and it snaps open. We have it bolted on its side and it doesn't seem to mind. It is very roomy which I needed.
It takes one 9v battery, which is easy to install and was easily programmed for the code. One hint, my code wouldn't take at first and it was fixed by putting in a new battery. The buttons are easy to feel and press without looking. The door is spring loaded so it opens on its own after the code is entered. It will bang into the bottom of the drawer if you don't put a pad there. It fits one compact gun and 3 mags easily. It would probably fit one full size gun up to 5 in barrel and one extra mag. It fits inside a drawer and while it has a slot for a cable anchor, it doesn't come with the cable. Still don't know how long the battery lasts, hopefully 1 year but I would accept 6 months.
This is a good safe for single pistol storage where quick access is wanted. That said, the door doesn't always open! You hear the latch click when you enter the combo but the door stays closed! This seems to happen when the door was previously closed gently. If you close the door with a firm press it seems to open the next time just fine. I don't know if this is a design issue or just my particular safe.
The beeps are too loud to permit practical opening in an emergency situation. The fingerprint reader works most of the time. About 80%. Again, not practical for an emergency situation. I've gone back to simplex locks.
