I was pleasantly surprised that my half baked idea of turning a department store Schwinn mountain bike into a single speed actually worked, and it worked only because of this device. When i finally got a good bike, I decided to play around with the old one that sits unused now. After ripping off and disposing of all the junk components that came on a fairly decent Schwin frame, I used this tensioner get past the vertical drop out problem. This tensioner fit perfectly, and has a good range of adjustment. A chain tool, a single speed freewheel, and this tensioner is all you need to breathe new life into that mountain bike sitting in the garage gathering dust. Like other reviewers on other sites, I could not get this right in the "push up" position, so I did what many others have done and just used it pushing the chain down. I have not yet the chain jump off the gears, so it seems OK either way, even though instructions say to use it pushing up the chain. I knocked a star off because it good the seller over a week to ship it...not even close to the estimated delivery date, it was 2 weeks before i saw it.

Like some mentioned before, it rarely works like in the photo! I run out of adjustment in the "push up" position before the chain is fully tight, even when I shortened the chain per the instructions. It took up maybe one link of slop before is was out of adjustment because my hangar has its hole slightly behind the drop out. If I add a few lengths of chain back in I can run it in the "push down" position. If you do a photo search on the net, that's what a lot of people are doing with this product even though its not ideal. I looked long and hard for a tensioner before trying this one and they all seem to have a few quirks so this one is as good as any I guess. If your derailleur hangar hole is even slightly behind the axle, just know that your range of adjustment is going to be very limited if your trying to push the chain up like the factory photo shows

Pros. No spring pivot slack, has roller bearings.
Cons. Rubber guide is three pieces and it seperated and fell out on me after just 20 miles of riding. Luckily I could ride with the chain slack . Chain basically bounces on the rubber because no teeth giving you chain noise and funny feeling on the pedal, especially pedaling fast. Can only work if your chain line is perfectly straight and using at least half inch of chain slack. Not recommended.
