Wow. This thing is outrageous. This isn't just another book for your shelf, folks, this is nothing less than a work of art unto itself. Vivid close-up imagery which reveals each strand of canvass and all other textures (almost like having the piece of art right before you), metallic gold pages which divide each section, numerous fold-outs worthy of framing (don't you dare butcher this book!!), a striking cover with gold-foil emblem, thick paper of the highest quality, a silk ribbon book-mark, an embossed dust-jacket, an awesome decorative box to store and move the thing.....I could go on. This is ultra-high-end book-making going on here, this is a publisher's labor of love. I wish more products of all types displayed this level of inspiration and devotion to excellence.
It would take a month or longer for me to read this gargantuan edifice, and it may take me awhile to get around to that, but there is obviously an expansive overview of Klimt's work and his personal life. This publication will be the gold-standard on Klimt--forever, certainly. In a decade from now you will only find these in high-end book shops locked behind glass counters. The price will be stratospheric, and you will regret the day you didn't buy it on Amazon. This book may seem expensive, but it is a BARGAIN for what you are getting. Yes, Taschen may do a lower-priced scaled-down version later, but if you are really into Klimt, this is the one you want.
The only caveat: you may have a hard time finding a place for it. My bookshelves have long-since filled up, and this is not the type of book you can cleverly tuck away some where. So, for me, this sadly goes into a closet for now along with several other Taschen XL's--but I'm glad I have it, and when I move my new place will definitely have to accommodate my Taschen XL book collection.
But, this monograph is so close to that presence that it is hard to complain. It's huge, like a Klimt. But it's worth the work out to read it. The paper is extremely high quality, textured. The reproductions luminesce on the pages. I have spent hours perusing this wonderful masterpiece of a monograph. Like other oversides Taschen monographs, this is worth every single penny.
Amazing images. Large full size and detail images.
I have to say it is the most beautiful book I own and I feel it is well worth $200.
the book itself is a piece of art.
If you love Klimt don't delay and get a copy. I would go for a new book with the matching cardboard box.
