Product Description

Bresh, the son of legendary player Merle Travis, and Jones, who is known as the greatest country player since Jerry Reed, have put together the ultimate "pickers record". The late great Chet Atkins is quoted on the CD jacket as saying "I think Thom Bresh & Buster B Jones individually are great players. But there is nothing like hearing them play together...it can NOT be duplicated".

Two master guitarists have come together to produce one of the best guitar albums of any kind. A wonderful mix of music and styles. I have had it for about four months now and still have to listen to it at least twice a week. Any review short of five stars should be thrown out. A guitar feast for a guitar starved public. Buy it and tell your friends about it. May another effort be coming soon.

I reviewed this CD for the official website of Chet Atkins, ...
These guys each have their own brilliance when playing solo, but playing together, they are like peanut butter and jelly.
As James Jensen said, this is the best album Merle Travis and Jerry Reed NEVER made!

This CD is the work of two absolute masters...Thom Bresh son of Merle Travis and Buster B. (Brad) Jones. This is the greates recording I have heard since the collaborations between Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins. Pure fingerpicking from two of the best.
I heard this and the word "Grammy" popped into my head.

There are few musicians proficient on any instrument at the same degree of mastery as Buster B. Jones and Thom Bresh. Buster and Thom just happen to both play perhaps the most popular instrument on earth. Their influences are similar, as are their styles, but there are obvious audible differences other than the fact that Thom is playing on a steel-string while Buster is laying the thumbpick to a nylon/gut string model.

This recording session has the informal feel of a living-room jam (a handful of brief entertaining dialogues are included - one of my favorites is after the pedal to the metal "Cannonball Romp" when Buster asks "can we play it..... slower?")

The selections are practically "fingerpickers greatest hits", but every cut is elevated to something special in the hands of these two masters. The previously mentioned track is actually a smokin' version of Dad/Mentor Merle Travis' Cannonball Rag. 9 lb Jam is a rip of Merle's "Nine Pound Hammer". These two masters give us a delicate, lovely and fiery version of "Malaguena". Every musical cut is a masterpiece, and even the liner notes are entertaining, such as the notes to "Red-Haired Boy", which is a traditional flat-pick favorite. Thom writes that they flatpicked RHB with finger picks, but that Buster said they could get jail time for that in Virginia.

Buster was just lost to us after a couple of decades that included things like winning the national fingerstyle championship in 1990. This CD is the tip of the iceberg of a wonderful musical legacy.

First things first. I do not own any other albums by Buster B Jones or Thom Bresh. I stumbled into the Groovemasters series starting with Vol. 10 featuring Phil Keaggy and Mike Pachelli. As I started to explore the other artist one CD stuck out, this one. I have listened to this a dozen times now and every time I hear something new. This is a fun and talented project from beginning to end. Highly recommend.
