Wow Gwendolyn vs. The Band Of Barren Hearts is a heart wrenching, sick, mad, twisted story of a girl (Gwendolyn/Gwen) and boy (Welch) that were involved in this story. They are 2 broken individuals that come together and try and save each other after horrible things were done to them in a Foster home and to think Welch's horrible care started at a much younger age.

There were some definite some tearful moments and I cried for the things that were done to them. Of course I can't tell you because I don't do spoilers and feel that you need to read the book too (HEED the warning at the end of this review)

And, OMG what a twisted ending. I am speechless and at the time of writing this I truly do not know how to take the ending of this book. This was another book that I couldn't put down until I had finished reading it well only interrupted by me having to go to work.

BIG WARNING: Mary E. Palmerin has a Disclaimer at the beginning of the book that states:
"Graphic scenes are depicted throughout the book and not intended for readers under the age of eighteen.
If you are expecting a romantic love story, please do not continue reading because this tale is not for you. Parts of this book contain sensitive subject matter that may be triggers for some people. Reader discretion is highly advised.
Do not proceed reading if you are easily offended by strong language, sexual encounters (both consensual and non-consensual), physical and emotional abuse, and detailed depiction of violence. Consideration of the above mentioned disclaimer is highly advised before reading."

I am giving this book 4.5 stars.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Beautifully written, there is a reality to it that will scar the heart and sicken the soul but still compels you to keep reading. Adults all over tell their children that there are no such things as monsters, but they're wrong. Some gleefully choose to be so. And for some there is no other choice but to open the gates of Madness and let loose the Monsters protecting their souls upon the world. Be sure to read the blurb to know what you're getting into.

I received this book for a fair and honest review. All opinions are completely my own.

This book is beautifully written. Hard to out down, yet hard to read because of the heartbreaking subject matter. I found myself wanting to reach out the characters to comfort them, to make things better for them, and feeling helpless because I couldn't. It breaks my heart because although it is a work of fiction, there are lost souls like Gwendolyn and Welch in the real world. Broken souls who are dealt a raw deal through no fault of their own and damaged because of a broken system. I am an HEA girl when it comes to my reading, yet I loved this book because of how well it was written, and because unfortunately there isn't always a happy ending in real life. It reminds the reader that everyone is fighting their own battle. Everyone has a monster inside of them and whether that monster is released or not is determined by how those around them treat them. Living by love or hate, is a choice that can shape lives. A choice that can either destroy them or nurture them. Thank you Mary for this heartbreakingly beautiful book. I can't wait for Welch's story.

Holy effing crap! Im not sure where to begin, my mind is still fractured and i dont see recovery anywhere in the near future. This book has destroyed me in the best possible way. To call the nature of it "dark" is putting it mildly but its a love story that could transcend time. The characters were so vivid and so developed, i felt like i was actually there, living among them, or inside their heads. The writing was so beautifully written, i cried on numerous occasions. I cannot recommend this book enough..it will break u and make u feel but it was worth every single word, every single tear. I wish i could un-read it just so i could start fresh again. Mary Palmerin does NOT disappoint!

I love, love, love Gwen and Welch! Gwen and Welch's experience claimed my heart from the beginning! This story is gut clenching, heartbreakingly, pitiful and extremely sad. Gwen and Welch's love and resilience are beautiful sights to behold!

For different reasons Gwen and Welch end up in the foster care system and in the same home. Their foster care parents are perverted, vile, evil molesters who force Gwen and Welch to perform and participate in unspeakable acts! Claude and Helen, the foster parents, are the epitome of evil and ultimately receive their karma!

Starved and severely abused, Gwen and Welch are on the run. These two kids are under the illusion their love will keep them safe and most important, together. While on the streets attempting to survive, they are forced back into the cycle of abuse and sex. The two must make enough money for their bus tickets to Portland, OR. Freedom. Fresh Start. New Beginnings. The authorities are closing in on Gwen and Welch. In an attempt to reclaim some portion of her life and not "unwillingly" separate from Welch, she allows a moving car to strike her during a police chase. It is the last time she and Welch are together. Gwen survives but the trauma "breaks" her and she is institutionalized.

After a decade in an mental institution and without any contact with Welch, she makes it to Portland, OR. Gwen is determined to pursue their dreams. Pursuing their dreams wIthout her sweet boy, her sweet monster, her Welch...

This book is poignantly heartbreaking and so freakin beautiful! I don't quite know what I was expecting when I started this story. However, it is a beautifully written, real, raw, story that will consume and exploit every emotion you possess! Due to dark subjects, this book may contain triggers for some readers. Please adhere to the warnings.

5+ stars!
