Syeira is not a New Orleans local, she’s a gypsy from the Camlo tribe.
On the other side of the bayou, Queen Patia Camlo, Syeira’s mother, is furious when Syeira reveals her relationship with Will. To the Camlo tribe, the Gypsy way is the only way. Desperate to put an end to their romance, Patia casts a spell so effective that even the great Grandmother Zenobia can’t fix the damage it creates.
Grandmother Zenobia is forced to decide how much of a sacrifice she’s willing to make to retaliate against Patia, as well as avenge her family without losing her own soul.

An Absolutely Fabulous Read!

As a writer who researched Vodou only recently for a novel, I certainly wish I had come across this title beforehand. I would have tried to find the author on social media and hounded her with questions. If you love the occult, if you love reading about cultures not your own, but you want to hear about those cultures from an authentic, warm and embracing voice, if you love feeling like you wish you knew an author personally, read this story. I promise you won't be disappointed. The story takes a well-loved theme---that of star-crossed lovers and adds a unique twist to it. The narrator's voice is delightful, the story, while fun, has depth and... oh, man, just READ IT. As an aside, and to make this review not too over the top: I have been told by editors never to describe people of color by their skin shade being compared to food, but this author does that ("chocolate") I guess I want to know if that is offensive to anyone. It doesn't feel offensive to me, but I would love a discussion on this topic. But if you want to feel that you're not sitting in your armchair, or on your bed, or wherever read, and be transported to another setting, then this is the story and author for you.

The blurb on the back made me think this would end with a magical battle between ancient sorceress Grandmother Zenobia and Queen Patia of the gypsies. It becomes much more, as several generations of Zenobia's family the Camlo gypsy tribe circle around each other, sometimes hating and sometimes loving each other. Zenobia is an amazing character, I really hope the author plans to write more about her. In the end, it's all about finding the people who will come to Sunday dinner.

A curse to be overcome to enjoy true love...YES!
Super relatable characters that you will become invested in...YES!
Occult and mysticism abound in this colorful tale about the obstacle that try to deny true love. The adventure is one you don't want to miss.
