Curiously, his booth at the festival was not swamped with admirers. The younger attendees probably didn't know who he was.
I bought his book so I could get the autograph of one of my heroes from the Steve Allen show. Gypsy Boots! Growing up in the '60s, I was addicted to the Allen show, staying up past bedtime to watch the 90-minute giggle-fest that served as a template for the early Letterman.
This book has dietary advice and recipes mixed with snippets from his glorious career as a California character. His back-to-nature philosophy was part of the lunatic fringe back in the day. Now his regimen of fresh organic fruits and veggies is mainstream. He opened a health food store in Hollywood before anyone knew what health foods were.
There will never be another Gypsy Boots. Long live Mr. Boots! I hope I have a long and happy life like him.
