Caz Artemus lives in a slow-moving Inter-planetary City Station and she is bored. She gazes into the universe and dreams of what it would be like to live on “the surface” There is so much that Caz wants to know and experience but everyone treats her like a trouble-maker and even her sister Felly despairs of Caz ever learning to be a “good citizen” and fit in. An encounter with a gypsy’s pet fanep changes everything for Caz.

Even though Gypsy Pearl is written towards the YA genre I easily identified with Caz. If you were ever that child who continually asked “why” you will enjoy it too. Caz captured my heart and I can’t wait for the next in the series.

Lia London's, The Gypsy Pearl (Book 1: Caren) offers readers a fast paced, entertaining science fiction, fantasy adventure that is targeted for young readers. It meets these criteria and then some. While my last statement is true, it is in many ways like Walt Disney movies that were billed as suitable to "children of all ages." This is a book I can unquestionably recommend to any member of my family.

The story, while set at an undetermined place in time with an Earth like planet and an orbiting ICS space station like vehicle named Arxon, gives readers a cast of realistic characters. Nothing is glossed over. Fourteen year Caz is the protagonist. She's smart, inquisitive and longs to visit Arxon. She lives with her sister and Dad, the doctor on Arxon. Her mom had gone missing ten years earlier. In the opening chapter, Caz appears to be attacked by a creature who travels with gypsies. He slashes her arm with razor like claws, then inserts a white spherical like object into her wound. As a result she develops superhuman strength. When the tallest, dumbest guy in class gets into an argument and shoving match, then punches her, Caz defends herself. When she attempts to report the incident to the Station Master, Caz is charged with a violent assault. She's given a choice, solitary confinement or deportation to a Reformatory for violent youth on the planet Caren. She jumps at the chance.

This story is packed with surprises. Caz continually uses ingenuity to solve problems. As I mentioned earlier, it is a fast paced page turner. If you enjoyed C.S. Lewis' Narnia, I think you'll enjoy this story. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Misunderstood Caz, finds herself throne into a riveting mystery when a strange creature implants an alien pearl in her arm. When forced to choose between solitary confinement aboard the space station or to go to a disciplinary camp on a nearby planet, Caz sees this as her opportunity to live out her dreams of adventure. Little does she know what dangers await her on the foreign planet. From the beginning of the book to the end, Caz has to fight to not only stay alive, but she is set on a road to self-discovery where she will have to choose between what is right and what is easy. I really enjoyed the book! I found myself connecting with Caz is so many ways. The emotional character arc was so real and details so vivid I could see this as a movie playing out in my mind. I believe author Lia London has made a fan for life with this book. I can’t wait to read more!

I feel like I've done more than read a book--I've gone on a journey to an incredible place and experienced strange and wonderful events with a cast of fascinating people, both familiar and alien. The writing is superb; the characters are so real you can hear their voices and feel their pain; the setting is painted masterfully with all five senses. This story will resonate for a long, long time, and I eagerly await the next in the series to find out what happens to Caz & company.

I was really impressed by this book! The main character is a teenage girl, Caz, who grew up on a space station and finally has the chance to travel to a planet during the story. My favorite part was the way the author described Caz's experiences on the surface. There were so many sights and experiences I would never have thought of that would be new to a person who had never been to a planet: natural gravity, dirt, stairs, fire, bodies of water, wind, and stars twinkling, to name a few. I found myself really able to believe that Caz had spent her whole life in space because the way these new experiences were described was so realistic. In addition, the characters were all well developed, with distinct personalities and styles of speaking that made me feel as though I was getting to know them personally. Even if the story hadn't been captivating (and it was!), it would have been worth the read for that. Now I can't wait to start the second book!

An out of this world adventure! Caz is a restless young girl who is tired of living in space and longs for adventure. She is sent to the island of Carin as punishment for an infraction and soon discovers a strange creature has imbedded a mysterious pearl beneath her skin. After escaping the reformatory she’s sent to, Caz makes friends with local gypsies and learns more about this strange creature and her own calling to save the species.

This is a fun, clean read for youth. I especially enjoyed how the author challenges our assumptions through the character of King, the creature who haunts Caz. The storyline and pace will keep a young readers attention and won't disappoint!

Looking forward to the rest of the series!
