I've had Gypsy on film (16mm) for 40 years and although its a Technicolor print, it's not nearly as easy to watch as just popping the DVD I bought a few years ago into a player. However, now with the Blu-ray FINALLY out, I can finally watch Gypsy on my video projector that produces a picture that looks better than 16mm film and rivals 35mm film on my 12 foot wide Cinemascope screen.

Maybe Warner Bros. Home Video will finally get smart and release other classics they own the rights to on Blu-ray, but to date, have all but ignored releasing them for some strange reason.

So if you're a Rosalind Russell or Natalie Wood fan this great musical film is a MUST HAVE Blu-ray!

Next, they need to release "Auntie Mame" (both the Rosalind Russell and Lucille Ball versions) and "The Pajama Game" in Blu-ray....just for starters. They appear to also own the DVD rights to the MGM classic "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". WHAT ARE THEY WAITING FOR??? They also need to finally get out a Blu-ray of the "new" SECOND RESTORATION of "Giant". The first one was released on regular DVD and the picture, while okay, was nothing to write home about and the sound was a total disgrace. I guess they already figured out that many people will buy the regular DVD first and STILL BUY the Blu-ray, and are milking it for all its worth (of course they're not the ONLY COMPANY doing this).

Finally, let me just take this opportunity to say that wile Warner's didn't release the horribly defective Blu-ray of "My Fair Lady" (CBS is responsible), they should tell CBS that the LOUSY Blu-ray reflects on "their" name that is on the titles. This would have never happened if Jack Warner was still alive and in control of the company.

I am a big fan of "Gypsy", having seen it onstage with Tyne Dale and Bernadette Peters on Broadway and having heard the recordings with those women as well as Angela Lansbury and Ethel Merman many times. This really is one of the best shows of all time, in my view. Clearly, Mama Rose is the main character and the show really rests on the shoulders of the lady playing her. For that reason, I can never understand why casting Rosalind Russell as Rose was ever controversial at all. There can be no doubt that she was a more skilled film actress than Ethel Merman. I think Russell is wonderful in this part: driven, brassy, pushy, comic, over the top, and, often, heartbreaking. Her "Rose's Turn" at the end is just great. She moves beautifully in the musical numbers when she needs too, as well. Sure, she does not sing all of her numbers by herself (her vocals are mixed, not dubbed, with Lisa Kirk's), and that has to be pointed out in an honest review. This was a common Hollywood practice in those days. Does it really make a difference? Not to me. This is not a stage production. We are not really watching a "performance", but the amalgamation of many days and weeks of performing into an edited whole. Kirk matches Russell's vocals well enough that it is not jarring or distracting. That said, Natalie Wood, who was dubbed in West Side Story sings her own numbers here. Her singing is pretty good. She is also gorgeous to look at and very believable as plain Louise who becomes glamorous Gypsy Rose Lee. Karl Malden is also good in the rather boring part of Herbie. The costumes are great, the sets are stagy, but opulent, and the cinematography really sumptuous. This is one of the last big, splashy Hollywood adaptations of a big Broadway hit, full of songs which have become standards, and a story which is moving, funny, and, best of all, ENTERTAINING. Get it!

'Gypsy' starts off simple enough. A mother barrels down the stage to yell 'sing out, Louise!' as her two daughters fervently act, sing and dance. This is the beginning of a long and harrowing psychological journey through the minds of people who all have a dream. Louise is always in her sister's shadow and wants to be part of a dance team with Tulsa, who wants to create it. Little Dainty June wants to finally be a Broadway star. The beleaguered Herbie wants to simply settle down and have a home of his own with a wife and children. The heart of the show however, is Rose Hovick. Her drives and ambitions are what moves the plot along, causing the drives and ambitions of her 'proxy-star' troupe to grow more rapidly - specifically..to get away from her. No matter who plays Rose, the character is up for great interpretation. The first time you watch Gypsy, you may think that she's just some loveable, wacky mother who's a bit goofy and just likes to travel and help her kids become stars...even when you find out or already knew the reason she did it. Repeated viewings give a deep psychological glimpse into the inner-workings of how a person who lives through others acts. Rose is very quick, but not quick enough. Whether or not she did it all for herself is up for interpretation, but Rose continues to endear the hearts and minds of musical afficianados because she speaks for a generation. A generation of the lonely, the depressed, the left in the background. That's why Gypsy endures.
