About the author

H. P. Lovecraft was born in 1890 in Providence, Rhode Island, where he lived most of his life. He wrote many essays and poems early in his career, but gradually focused on the writing of horror stories, after the advent in 1923 of the pulp magazine Weird Tales, to which he contributed most of his fiction. His relatively small corpus of fiction--three short novels and about sixty short stories--has nevertheless exercised a wide influence on subsequent work in the field, and he is regarded as the leading twentieth-century American author of supernatural fiction. H. P. Lovecraft died in Providence in 1937.

In terms of the books, they’re gorgeous! The covers are so awesome and have this neat almost embossed effect between the matte “fabric” of the cover and the glossiness of the metallic lettering.
The type is a nice size; it’s very readable, though the margins are a little tight (kinda close to mass-market paperback margins, though the books feel nothing like one). The organization of the stories (as a “casual” Lovecraft reader) makes sense to me, with most of the books following a chronological story, and one of them basically being “everything else that didn’t fit in the other books” like his one-off short stories. Each book also comes with a relatively brief foreword giving some context to Lovecraft’s life, the mythos, and other contemporary knowledge. I hear this is an incomplete collection, largely missing his uncredited and early works, but I feel like the stories that are here are the real “meat and potatoes” Lovecraft. Nothing major is missing here.
The books are pretty small, a bit bigger than a handbook or pocketbook perhaps, which is perfect for storing in a purse or bag for easy reading. The paper itself also feels like nice quality and not like it’s going to tear or fall apart under use or notation.
Since it all comes in a very attractive box set, it also looks great on a shelf with the rest of my books! Overall, I’d definitely order some like these again for a friend interested in Lovecraft who doesn’t mind a technically incomplete set and the smaller margins.
I would encourage anyone wanting a good portable and readable set of Lovecraftian horror to get a hold of this set. The hardback set includes a volume of the Dreamlands stories were the paperback set does not.

The box is very thick card with a fabric top & a nice logo on the sides. The only disappointment is that the barcode is printed on the back of the box itself - such a pity it wasn't on a removable sticker or even a piece of paper within the clingfilm. Nevertheless, the back will usually not be visible when this set is displayed on a bookcase.
The books themselves are small - a good size to take with you while travelling. They are nicely bound with good quality paper & nice fabric covers which are a joy to touch & smell (and who doesn't like smelling new books?!). The title & the pattern on each front cover is also indented, making it even more tactile.
When I first came across Lovecraft's work, it was in the form of old paperbacks printed in (I think) the '50's or '60's which had titles such as 'The Dunwich Horror And Other Stories', just like this volume. But these are not collected in the same way. Here, the stories are collected by theme, so the more famous stories are kept together, as are the Randolph Carter stories & tales set in the dreamlands - which is a very good system. Another minor disappointment is that the introduction (which consists primarily of general background about Lovecraft) is the same in every book, except for one paragraph which relates to the book in question. As this is a set, it would have been nice to have a different intro for each one, which would have given the publishers a chance to provide more information. But it's the stories themselves which hare the stars of the show.
This is not a complete collection & nor does it claim to be. But all of Lovecraft's best & most influential works are here. Comparing the contents of this one to a complete collected volume which I also own, I do not feel that I have been short-changed in buying this set. Indeed, I am more likely to read this edition because having Lovecraft's work split into several smaller volumes instead of one breeze-block of a thing is much easier on my wrists, plus the fabric covers are a joy to hold. Recommended.
UPDATE - This box-set edition has a contents page in each volume (as per the photograph I have added) & page numbers. I presume that the reviews which say otherwise are referring to the Kindle version (which I have not seen, so don't know whether it has a contents page or not) of a different edition.

Despite being paperback, this one is still quite heavy - so some readers may prefer a multi volume set.
