Some mutants are concerned about normal humans researching supers and mutants. They worry that they will try to find a means of recreating their powers or worse, finding a way to take them away. They hire Winterfury, a professional assassin super (that appropriately blasts ice) to kidnap the professors involved in Psystar’s research class on supers and mutants.
Psycom makes another appearance and he is cemented in my mind as a real jackass. For example, he’s always pissed that other heroes are taking “his” gigs thus affecting his bottom line. He puts a psychic imperative into Diva to go to a strip club. He strips Sparks and renders her vulnerable to Winterfury. He doesn’t seem to care about anyone besides himself.
Speaking of jerks/idiots, a new super, Neon, has the ability to drain heroes powers. He gets it into his head that if he knocks out Rayna and brings her to his apartment she’ll see he’s a nice guy and will date him! It does not go as planned.
Borgz breaks into a robotics lab to steal some more parts for his robot body. To his surprise, the place is also being raided by the Gahranii pirates (there to get hi-tech equipment to repair their ship). Borgz doesn’t get any new parts, but he gets a bigger prize; the alien shuttlecraft. The pirates (with some help from Lady Nocturne’s mutants) recapture their main ship from the air force base in which it was being studied.
I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next and immediately began reading the next book in the series.
The only issue I have is that I wish some of the new villains who actually get a chapter devoted to their viewpoint were a bit tougher. Both Neon and the earlier Gravity guy were captured quite easily.
This book is the tenth in the series and is quite a fun read as you follow the development of several the main characters, combat angry mutants and space pirates, and still manage to have a party.
