Unfortunately, there were a lot more typos than usual.
The story begins with Borgz cruising around the solar system in his stolen shuttlecraft when he reawakens an alien transmitter. The signal is detected by a Kurcet scout ship and they come to Earth to investigate. The Kurcet are ridiculously strong (100 times stronger than a normal super) and have advanced technology. They plan to alert their people, invade earth and enslave the populace. Although there are only 7 Kurcet on the scout ship will it be to much for the heroes of earth?
I was glad to see the return of Bounty hunter Sparks in a much more central role. I find myself liking her more and more and hope to see her return in future books.
This series has been fun because it was whimsical and entertaining, with the characters having almost real world worries as well as dealing with the local criminal element. That allowed the stories to be enjoyable and fun.
This story brought in a group of aliens who could probably defeat the entire Justice League of America, Avengers and X-men simultaneously using only one hand and a lot of attitude.
Well, they aren't that powerful, but they were extremely overpowering and had really only one weakness.
This destroyed the fun of the tale for me. I felt like Kevin Rau decided that his whimsical fun was no longer important. Action stories can be fun, but this just felt like he didn't want to take the time to create a credible enemy and just gave the aliens incredible powers to compensate.
the characters remain about the same, I do have a few quibbles with the lack of development there, but the real problem was the complete lack of a slowly developing plot and tale. This story was pure action and relied on a gimmick rather than having a well thought out and well conceived villain.
And all the heroes wrap it up in one book. Please, pick a story line and go with it- so many nice touches- we could explore the sub groups (the goth/mutant alliance/partnership/truce/lay of the land, the hang outs and inner workings...there is sex but ZERO drugs? explains). The police's 'hands off to certain areas could be fascinating. Would love to see a 'semi-super' cop operating in that area.
I felt the author wanted 'epic' in this one..... but didn't quite get there.... action scenes are very tricky to write.
