The mix of characters was enjoyable, as well as some of the banter, and starting with well-equipped - and wealthy - protagonists was not an impediment for me. It enabled the author to show what could be done if a group managed to equip themselves appropriately. The story was also realistic in showing that even so equipped, there were situations where it simply wasn't possible to overcome the difficulties involved in dealing with large groups of predators, where a law enforcement or military intervention was necessary to save the day.
All around, a fun read. I look forward to continuing to read the series to see how the author develops - and then deals with - what appears to be the actions of an interstellar group of aliens who are responsible for the emanations that caused the current problems and damage to infrastructure.
At first, people are confused and annoyed. The Large Hadron Collider had successfully performed an important experiment just before the grid began failing, but that seems to be an unlikely cause of this event. People wonder if the sudden disruption, which turns into a complete blackout, is the result of an attack by another country.
As power goes out again and fails to come back on, and even ham radios cease operating, isolation reduces the country to small groups, each struggling to find and keep the essentials of life.
The breakdown of civil order begins almost immediately. After the initial sporadic looting and mayhem at the beginning subsides, marauders begin organizing for long term domination.
Palatable water and food supplies dwindle as complacency ends among many. Maybe no one knows anything about why this has happened or how long it's going to last, but why is irrelevant: the question is how people will survive.
Our heroes are likeable, brave, and caring. One couple are preppers and have a handy stockpile of food, equipment and weapons. They join with their friendly local bartender, who they learn is a capable ex-military man. As they rescue and draw others into a core group, they find and build a base of operations.
But even their good planning and effort may be insufficient when an army of raiders come pillaging, murdering, raping, and burning their way across the countryside. What happens next is a gripping work of fiction.
Or is it our future?
