My biggest critique would be the feeling of an incomplete story. I get the trending style of authors to build towards a sequel and end on a cliffhanger (I really do). I can enjoy reading a good cliffhanger ending when it's accomonied with a good, rich plot with a climax somewhere in the middle of the story. This story really seemed to lack identity- as if the author really didn't know where she wanted to go until the end of the book. But the story just ends after an exceedingly long build up as the protagonist desperately searches for her father (Capt Cutter) throughout the entirety of the book. Avoiding too many spoilers here, I'll just state that all the build up was anti-climactic (for me, anyway- perhaps other readers may enjoy it and read it differently). I do think there's potential here for a good saga with this story arc, however not if the sequels are written anything like this one... the reader should be rewarded with real, measurable plot progression after making it through an entire novel of "build-up," like that, versus a cliffhanger that leaves you with more questions than answers.
The writing style itself was entertaining, with excellent character development... It's not quite enough to tip the scales of this review, but the author seriously does a fantastic job creating believable, relatable characters that readers will feel for... I really enjoyed the characters- particularly the protagonists as the elites didn't seem to stand out too much but the action scenes came together with a real sense of suspense & drama when the protagonists fought the antagonists in this story. Still, great and memorable characters still need to be accompanied with a great and memorable plot (with more measurable progression of the plot) in order to truly come together to formulate an epic story.
I would still look forward to purchasing and reading a potential sequel to this Smoke and Shadow, but this story still felt somewhat empty... The characters are still good enough that I would hope to even see some of them in a future Halo game or movie.
Rion has spent her life as a space scavenger looking for scrap, weapons, technology, treasures and Forerunner technology. She has a good ship, the Ace of Spades, with the best technology she could afford and she made a reasonable life and fortune with it. She has a small but loyal crew that was skilled and followed her orders to the letter. She is a good leader and they like her.
Rion wants to find worthwhile booty to help make her and her crew wealthy and happy, but most of all she wants to find her father. She wants to know what happened to her personal hero that she adored as a child. After all of the years of wandering and looking she finally begins to find some leads of information. Her crew is behind her to help find her father. The journey that they embark on is dangerous and and challenging. They need all of their skills and luck to succeed. Treasures and surprises awaited them, as long as they had the courage to pursue their dreams…..
This is a very good book. I have read all of the Halo books that have been written and many are excellent and some are bad. This author can write a good story and most importantly she has followed the Halo storyline and concepts that Halo fans have come to know and love. Many of the other newer authors have tried to write their own stories and put their own political spin into the Halo concept. In my opinion they failed miserably and wrote books that were not interesting and were so dogmatic in trying to put their own spin on the Halo saga. The original Halo books were some of the best science fiction I have ever read and I have read thousands of books in my life. The saga did not need to be rewritten but just continued in the same storyline style and intensity in which it began.
Kelly Gay has written a short story that I liked a lot. The book is only 150 pages long but it made me hope that she continues to write a second, a third and a fourth book in the Halo saga. Her heroine has a challenge ahead of her that can lead to a series of interesting books that Halo fans would love to read. Kelly only has to remember to embrace the Halo saga and not try to change history or to destroy the wonderful stories and characters already written in the first Halo books.
I look forward to Kelly’s future Halo books. I rated this one at 5 stars. It is a very good start!
I enjoy this person's style, and the turn of events were actually suspenseful at parts. 343i doesn't have the best narratives at times, but I hope Kelly Gay becomes more involved. I like her almost as much as Eric Nylund and Joseph Staten.
