When the DA decided not to prosecute a drunken cop for running down a young family the neighborhood reacts with violence and demands for justice. Then when the young wife of a police officer found murdered in their home tensions in community threaten to explode again. The DA decision to assign his top homicide prosecutor Mike Gioca to the case of the murdered woman pleases no one; the cops do not trust him because he once prosecuted on of their own, the community does not trust him because he is the DA’s favorite son.
The city fathers are raging for quick arrest and the community is warning Gioca better not just round up the usual suspects. Added to the brew is the fact that the only witness to the murder is a two-year-old girl.
When Mike orders the arrest of a local sex abuser the community rails that he grabbed the most convenient suspect but things quiet down. Then when Mike almost sabotages his own case by demanding every minute piece of evidence is examined the police turn against him for blowing an open and shut case.
Eventually Mike’s hopes, and the hopes of his team; veteran detective Tim Clark and rookie assistant district attorney Dina Mitchell, rest on a baby’s pacifier found in the pocket in the suspect. It must tie the killer to the murder or he will walk free
ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Over a course of 30 years Michael Vecchione served as a prosecutor in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office reaching the rank of Chief of the Rackets Division. handling everything from homicides to political corruption. He is the author of two non-fiction books.

Jerry Schmetterer is an award winning print and broadcast journalist. He served as Director of Public Information in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office for 12 years. He is the author of five non-fiction books.

Well written and compelling, it is a perfect read when you have some time on your hands. The fact is I was frustrated that it wasn’t longer, given how compelling and interesting it was to read. Sadly, the recent murders of that family in Washington DC only reinforces how frighteningly real the story must be! I only hope I'll be reading more from these talented storytellers.
