Necessary to Connect Old Computer to New TV

After looking everywhere for something capable on connecting a friends older computer (think Windows XP) to her new HDTV and coming up with nothing, I almost gave up. So glad I didn't. This converter is exactly what we needed AND the price was perfect!

One of the questions I had while trying to search was "What in the world do I even need?" I got very frustrated over the list of products that came up in the search that used phrasing like "VGA to HDMI cord" to describe what I thought I needed. BUT they will not work, and here's why:

VGA (the big blue plug on the back of your computer tower and monitor) is analog. HDTVs are digital.

So, remember when you could have just an antanea out back and could watch tv with just that and a TV? That was an analog signal. It didn't require anything to translate its message to the TV because they spoke the same language. So, when everyone decided that those same stations that used to be analog were going to now be digital, all of a sudden you couldn't watch TV anymore with just an analog antanea. Now you had to have a converter box. The box is what allowed the digital programming picked by by the antanea to communicate with your TV that was still analog.

A cord by itself won't let you change analog to digital. That's why you have to have a converter. And this one does the trick quite nicely.

I just upgraded my old 720p 50in Plasma (with VGA plug) to a 75in LED 4K with only HDMI inputs. I have a home theater PC that only has VGA out and I didn't want to upgrade the computer just for the new TV. After reading some of the 1 star reviews I was very worried this product might not work at all.

I'm pleased to say it has worked exactly as I wanted! I did briefly panic after I plugged everything in and then turned everything on. The screen was completely black for about 5 minutes and then the mouse appeared and a couple minutes later the rest of the login screen appeared. It appears the computer took a minute to recognize the change in the display cable. It also took longer than normal for the desktop background to appear after I logged in. But after that everything has worked fine. I restarted and everything was back to normal as far as load time and appearance. The computer automatically updated my resolution from 720 to 1080 which was great! I've been watching recorded TV off the PC without a problem. If anything changes I will update this review.

Note on audio: I have a separate USB to optical audio converter that carries surround sound to my receiver (Siig 7.1) so I can't comment on the audio performance of this device.

Dreamcast users note: Doesn't actually upscale

I am using this with a third-party Dreamcast VGA cable and it works--HDMI picture and sound come out of the box, and with the VGA connection it's definitely the best quality you can get out of a Dreamcast. However, it outputs 480p--still an enormous improvement over 480i on modern displays--so it appears the box doesn't actually upscale. This makes no difference at all and any decent display can likely upscale the image better than a cheap scaler box could anyway. Make sure to use it with a display that can be set to 4:3 if you don't like the stretched graphics (or play one of the few widescreen Dreamcast games!). The sound is just fine and I didn't notice any lag.

Also to people with problems, make sure you're using VGA box capable Dreamcast games. There are ways around it if you aren't but that's too complex to address in a review.

For non-Dreamcast use I haven't tried any other VGA source, but I imagine the output resolution is the same as what you put in.

I bought this video converter as I was dealing with a situation where a projector was permanently installed from the ceiling. There was only an HDMI line ran through the walls and ceiling to the projector. Although having an HDMI line is great I still have a lot of clients that I only have VGA output on their laptops. I tried using a standard HDMI to female VGA dongle adapter which doesn't work. I learned that you have to use a specifically designed box like this that is powered to make the conversion from VGA to HDMI. I plugged it in and was able to get video signal to the projector right away so I was very happy with that. Very straightforward and solve the issue. The only thing I wish is that the box was built a little bit better. He just isn't quite as solid as I would like and it may not hold up over time but for the price it's more than adequate. Overall very happy with the purchase.

Works fine. I had some trouble getting the sound to work, but that is most likely complications with HDMI handshaking and the audio drivers on my PC. Bottom line, don't assume the sound is broken just because it doesn't work the first time. You may have to reboot your PC or power cycle the monitor to get it to work. And sometimes you just have to wait a while for Windows to find and install the right driver for the new hardware.

I used it to connect an auxiliary monitor to my main PC. The VGA input of the monitor is limited to 1360x768, but going through the HDMI input I get 1920x1080. My laptop didn't do quite as well. However, I got it to work acceptably. The problem with my laptop is probably on the laptop end more than the converter box. I upgraded the laptop to Windows 7 from XP and there is no (WIN 7) driver for my video card, so I'm using one that mostly works. The most likely explanation is that the resolutions supported by the converter box and my laptop's video card just didn't match up very well.

Well I was skeptical at first but thought I'd give it a try and about ten days went by from the day I put the order through,
the day it arrived I followed the directions entirely and it worked the first time , Good product
the only down side is the power supply emits noise that my AM radio picks up so in order to listen to the news on the radio I have to unplug the power supply to the converter, other than that great product.
I liked the product because it was the only unit that allows my computer to be hooked to my HDTV which didn't come with a VGA input so rather than purchasing a new computer this was the next solution and a good investment and certainly highly recommend it to others
