Also, when you receive the adapter, it comes with this super tiny CD which contains the drivers, which you don't even need. Your computer will recognize the drivers itself, but the CD is sketchy as hell and some of the files are in Chinese. There are no instructions provided with the product.
Overall, I've spent ALL NIGHT trying to get it to work and frankly this thing is the biggest piece of crap I ever purchased. I do not recommend this product, and frankly I'm so upset that this didn't work that I just caved and bought a PC controller.
-------------- UPDATE to 2 STARS --------------
It is actually possible to plug the controller all the way in, you just have to use quite a bit more force than I expected.
Also, the random button presses only happen when an extension cable is used (either USB or Playstation extension cable) The same Playstation extension cable works perfectly on my PS2. The same USB Extension cable works perfectly on my Xbox 360.
So the device is just really really picky such that you can't use an extension of any kind or you'll get random button presses that ruin the experience. Since I can actually use the device within these severe restrictions I've increased my rating slightly to 2 stars. (It's still not 3 stars because I was using an extension cable for a reason.... My RetroPie is too far from my couch to use the controller comfortably, it pulls the RetroPie off the table. In order to use it without an extension I have to pickup the RetroPie and set it down on the floor infront of the Tv, which is an unnecessary inconvenience to say the least. Vibration still doesn't work AT ALL. I'm still looking for a better quality replacement.
But anyways.. the sole purpose of this buy was obviously to use a PS1/PS2 controller with my PC/MAC primarily because I am a streamer and I like to play guitar hero (clone hero pc version) And for those who are a CH player like myself this wouldn't be the one to recommend really.
It DOES work but only with the first generation red octane GH1 controller. Not the GH2/3 white octanes. But also keep in mind that not all perimeters work as well. Like the whammy bar, tilt, will not work either.
This product is best suited for users who want to use just a normal DUALSHOCK remote. Not fitted for really DDR or GH. So be aware.
If you're a DDR player or CH go with the ramphet where you won't have issues what so ever and everything is compatible. In conclusion, this is an "Ok" buy.
Bought this one instead: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ND3XXA, and it worked perfectly for this purpose under Linux, no drivers necessary.
For what it's worth, if you intend to use a non-dance pad Playstation controller under Linux, it did detect this device with no special drivers in Ubuntu, and should work for that purpose.

Having connected it to my computer (Windows 10) and plugged a couple of controllers into the ports, the drivers appeared to have installed correctly, but the controllers seemed to be dead.
As I was unplugging one though, I saw a brief flicker from an LED on the board, which until that point I wasn't aware existed.
After some more poking and prodding, it became apparent that the pins in the PS2 controller were not mating reliably with those in socket.
I'd guess this is probably down to poor manufacturing tolerances or a manufacturing defect...
