I just purchased this product for the 2nd time and specifically bought it because it was made in the USA. However when my 2nd order arrived there was no indication of where it was made, USA or otherwise so I feared China. I subsequently wrote to Happy Dog Place (HDP) and asked some questions about the product I had received. They responded very quickly and with the information I expected so I appreciate that, however am not pleased that there was not notification of the change, and what that change was. I am sending these back, unfortunately at my expense and time.

Below were the questions I asked, and the response:

QUESTIONS:

Hi,

I ordered the 2 pound bag of duck jerky through Amazon for the 2nd time. The first time it said \"made in USA\", however it does not now. I have some questions related to this product:

1) Where is the duck raised that is used for the jerky?
2) Where does the dehydration processing take place?
3) It says only one ingredient - \"duck breast filets\", with no preservatives or added coloring. Can you please confirm this is true?

RESPONSE:

Hi Terri,
The current stock we have is currently not from the US, it is from a different manufacturer. The duck is from China, but it is FDA tested and approved.
We unfortunately lost our old manufacturer. We are very close in getting a new manufacturer that makes the duck in USA. We know our customers would prefer that.
We apologize for this inconvenience.

Thank you for your business

My dog loves these duck jerky treats. And they are made in the USA so I don't have to worry about possible contaminated meat from China. Worth the extra cost for the safety IMO. Also, 2 lbs is a LOT of jerky. This will last a while.

One other thing worth mentioning, the duck jerky I previously bought from the pet store (made in China) had a lot of very hard, sharp ends. I always broke those off because I was worried my dog may choke on them since she eats them so fast. These don't have such pointy hard edges, so I have not had to trim off any sharp ends.

We ordered these treats after the FDA warning about jerky treats from China. We'd primarily been using a different brand of duck jerky that was made in China.

As another reviewer noted, other than a sticker saying made in the USA, there was no other indication of where this was made or even a full list of the ingredients. The jerky was very dry and brittle and the bag had no seal.

About a month after starting her on these treats our dog (8 1/2 year old shih tzu) became incredibly ill. She refused to eat, was vomiting, had diarrhea and lost about 4 lbs of body weight (her regular weight is 16-17 lbs and she was down to 13 lbs). After numerous visits to her regular vets and specialists, she was diagnosed with acquired Fanconi syndrome. Her symptoms and diagnosis fit those found in dogs that have been suspected of being ill from the Jerky treats.

The good news is our dog has recovered after months of supportive care including syringe feeding via a nasogastric tube.
We've reported this particular purchase to the FDA as well as provided them what we had remaining of the treats for testing.

We also had her eating the chicken strips from HDP and I will duplicate this review there as well.

Got these as a Christmas gift (thanks Wendy and Willie). Our dogs (older aussie mix and rat terrier mix puppy) love them, as do our canine friends at the park. There are only two drawbacks - they are on the expensive side (more than porterhouse steak, here) and they go VERY quickly. Would have given them 5 stars if they were less expensive. On the plus side, they are not as smelly as the other duck strips we were using, and the lack of smelliness does not seem to diminish their dog appeal. We like that they are made in the USA.

My dogs have food allergies so the plain duck is great. They will knock you over for one of these.
They are, unfortunately, a bit pricey. But if your dogs have food allergies you've got to get some.

Two of three previous US-made batches of this product seemed good. Our dogs, loved it, and had no health problems, but last batch was obviously absent of USA-made label, and seemed drier and less palatable. Chinese pet food has killed HUNDREDS pf American dogs in recent years, and Chinese baby food has sickened american babies, causing kidney problems because of impure ingredients. You risk your dog's life when buying Chinese pet food un-tested by American labs!

My picky "Portuguese Pedengo Pequeno", at least that's what my neighbor's daughter believes, will only eat duck jerky as a treat. I used to be able to buy it at Walgreen's "Pet Shoppe" brand, but they have, apparently, stopped making it. It's expensive, about $16.00/ lb, so getting this product at about $14.50/ lb was worth a try. Maxi loves it and I froze about 2/3rd of it and take it as needed. I have gotten equally good duck jerky for a lower price on Amazon, but that item was not in stock. It has to be 100 % duck, otherwise Maxi would sniff it and walk away
