Product Description

The F&V HDV-Z96 is small in size, but with 96 Power LEDs this light packs a lot of punch.

With its compact form factor, and ability to connect onto other Z96 units, this LED light has many applications.

Tuck the light into small spaces, attach it via an articulating arm on top of your camera, or link multiple units together to get light output similar to that of a conventional 1x1 LED panel.

It also features a magnetic filter system that makes adding or removing filters a breeze.

You can power up the unit with either AA Batteries, a Sony NP-F Battery, or through its DC jack.

This light allows for the versatility that is needed for a shoot in the studio or on location.

Perfect for on-camera mounting, it comes with a ball joint with cold-shoe mount. Compatible with any camera with a cold-shoe mount, such as the Canon 5D/7D or Nikon D4/D800.

The F&V (Foto & Video) HDV-Z96 certainly exceeds its expectations.

This thing just works. Used it to shoot a symphony ball atop my 5dmkIII and got great even color temp with all light intensities. I didn't opt for using a rechargeable battery, but with normal batteries, I was able to get something like 4+ hours out of it. I never actually depleted the batteries because the shoot only lasted those 4 hours. I recommend picking this thing up.

I used on a video shoot. This is one powerful light. Don't use alkaline batteries though, they will heat up dangerously hot. (the batteries not the light) I would recommend getting the battery pack. I will test with Nickel metal hydride and let everyone know. I had three of these lights and it was enough to power a 3 point light setup for a hair and makeup shoot.

These lights are amazing. I used them to video in night clubs and they worked great. I purchased a pair, when I needed more light I just snapped the second light on and it was daylight in the club. Great for interviews as well.

I received this light about 2 weeks ago and have used it on one video job so far. A wedding reception for 4 hrs. I really like the light weight design and the 96 led lights in a 16x9 pattern. It has a wide beam and from the video comparisons I have seen, and my own personal use, I think it beats the competitors. I previously owned a Litepanels Led light and 2 cool lux lights that I put Led bulbs in and an glad I sold them and purchased this HDV-Z96 LED Photo/Video Light Kit.
While using it on the first shoot I had used the AA batteries in the light instead of the rechargeable camera batteries but am today testing to see how long it will run on a Large fully charged NON OEM Hi-capacity B-963 7.4 Volt Li-ion battery. As I am writing this the light has been on using the Hi-capacity B-963 battery for 2 3/4 continuous hrs without a flicker. (I am editing this to let everyone know it ran for 5.5 hrs on my 4 year old B-963 6900mAh battery) When this battery does finally run out I will test a smaller and then a smaller Sony NP570 battery. (The 5 year old Sony NP570 battery ran it for 1hr 25 min) There was no flicker just out like a light switch.
The light has 2 magnetic filters that come with it. I really like those. I added another pice of diffusion paper in between and the magnets hold it firm and secure. I have on occasion lost the diffusion paper when using my older Cool lux and light panel lights but do not worry about these coming off or getting too hot.
The hot shoe connector that comes with it is very useful and secure. You can adjust the pan or tilt of the light and when tightened I have not had it come loose.
You can control the light intensity by using the variable control knob. It is easy to turn on and off on the fly during some run and gun shooting.

I'm not sure what happened to D. Toms' light but we've been using our light for many weddings and events and it's performed wonderfully. Throw a Sony battery on and you're good for a long time. I love the dimmer and how it puts out an adequate amount of light that isn't too too harsh.
We liked it so much we bought another light for our other camera crew.
We've realistically probably used this light for at least 30 weddings thus far and it works like new and no I'm not a paid reviewer.

I knew this was probably a knock off version given the price difference compared to the one being sold on the F&V website (around $160), but I bought it anyway based on outside reviews. This is my first light panel, purchased for the purpose of nightscapes, so that's the basis of my review. First off, for Milky Way photography and shooting a smallish subject (e.g., a tree), this light was too bright, even at the dimmest setting. So, I couldn't leave it on for the duration of the exposure. But it cast an even light and was much easier to work with than a flashlight. I need to see if putting a napkin or something would solve the problem of brightness.

On the flipside, at it's brightest setting, I could actually use the auto focus on my camera, which I sometimes had to do if I accidentally moved the lens. So, I'd rev up the brightness on my subject, switch to autofocus, and then after the camera would lock on, go back to manual. I could never do this with the flashlights I'd been using for light painting.

The construction felt ok - it's kinda heavy. But again this is my first panel, so I have no reference point. I liked the orange filter - it helps to counter the blueness of the LED lights. I bought rechargeable batteries and I'm glad. Using alkaline batteries would've been too bothersome. But you have to detach the battery door FIRST before trying to slide in the battery. The latch otherwise blocks it.

I'm glad I purchased this. Just got to figure out how to make the light dimmer.

I have 2 of these and really like them. The quality is as good as any light out there and I really like the magnetic diffusers. I have a couple of other small led lights (CN-126 and CN-160) and while those are brighter, they do not have a couple features that the Z96 has. The Z96 has an AC plug. While these do not come with the AC wall adapter, you can pick one up on-line for about $8.00. I am surprised that they have this feature but do not offer the AC adapter in their Z96 kit. And the other feature which I already mentioned is the magnetic diffusers. The CN-126 and 160 and most other small led lights have a slip in design. In use, the slip in type diffusers have come out (slip in, slip out). I imagine I could tape or shim those up so they didn't do that, but haven't. Also, the ball joints on all of these lack. I just take them off and replace them with a Giottos MH1004 mini ball head.

While they do have a dimmer which works well, unless you are shooting "mood" photos or videos, you will probably need to crank these up all the way and perhaps use 2 or more.

Just wish these were brighter.

Pros:
Good Quality
Can clip numerous lights together
Magnetic Diffusers
Reliable
Has AC receptacle
Low Cost

Cons:
Does not come with AC adapter (but this feature is there)
Not as bright as I would like
As with most imports, no warranty is available
