Installed these in my '04 Subaru Imprezza WRX wagon so I can deliver a righteous dose of SuperTone wrath to any mortal who dares upset me behind the wheel. They are especially effective at close range, when all 118 decibels can be fully applied to inattentive and/or negligent drivers. They have a sonorous, rally-car sounding dual tone that is very piercing from outside the car but completely pleasant and innocuous on the inside. Their high-range is sufficient for piercing the eardrums of even the most hearing-impaired motorists, and also sends certain breeds of attack dogs into heat. Their vicious red exterior glares out from behind my grill, just conspicuous enough to make a pedestrian second guess that late-signal street crossing. Installation was a breeze, use the supplied relay with a fused harness off the battery and some grounds, and you'll be scaring the dentures out of cotton-tops in your neighborhood in no time. I recommend combining these horns with 7+ years of traffic-fueled angst on the streets of San Francisco.

I have these horns and love them. Install was easy, but time consuming. I suggest mounting them behind the grill like the other reviewer. I've had them installed for a few months. I haven't noticed them getting dirty, and I enjoy driving on dirt.

The hella relay is strongly recommended. Without the relay, the horns do not get enough power and will not get to 118db. Also, if the horns are not grounded correctly (use the battery ground), they will not get to 118db.

Installation was fairly simple. The one's I got were made from India (I think they used to be made in Germany). I know some models come with the 5-pin relays, but the unit that I got came with a 4-pin relay and the brackets attached to the back of horns (as shown in the pictures); I highly recommend using the relay to maximize its operation. I used aftermarket brackets and pre-assembled wiring from another company which provided their own 5-pin relay, instead of using the brackets and relay that came with the HELLA Supertone's to make installation simpler, cleaner and symmetrical (i.e. if I used the included brackets it would've made it look like my car was "cross-eyed" since the horns would've been closer together towards the middle). The sound this set of horns make is a higher toned loud alarm-type rather than deep and booming fog horn-type. It's like someone screaming at you. It-is louder than my tiny original one-horn set up. The other part is the looks; it has a tendency to attract attention when folks see it; my car is dark and the red is very noticeable; they probably think it's some sort of lighting equipment on my car since you can basically see them through my grills. I'm painting it the same as my car's body paint, dark grey, since I wasn't really into getting the visual attention as I was into getting louder horns.

Hella Supertones are simply the best. I doubt you can find a better set of horns. I have them in both cars. For a motorcycle, the large diameter and depth is a problem in terms of finding a good mounting place. Also they weigh a lot more than the OEM horn. The large size seems out of proportion on motorcycle. Removing the red grille lessened the physical dimensions and painting brackets and screws chimney black made the horn less dominating visually. Definetly recommended on a car, and extra safety on a bike. Needs thick gauge copper wiring and relay for best results. What's special: when about 100 yards from a buildings wall, you can actually hear the echo coming back half a second later, if you press the horn button for a very brief moment. Downside: too loud for pedestrians, will scare and annoy - seriously.

This is my 3rd set of Hella Supertone horns. The first 2 were purchased long ago to upgrade the sound of a Mercedes and Land Rover. They were made in Germany. This set was made in India. Other than buying factory replacement horns for a vehicle whose horn sound you like, buying horns based on an expectation of a certain sound or tone is actually quite difficult. I like the sound of the Supertones, but I knew that before buying them.

They really sound like Mercedes Benz horns from the 1970s - early 2000s. If you like that sound, you will certainly like these. Others may find the sound kind of shrill. One thing is for sure: any prolonged blast is impossible to ignore. You will be noticed. You will be heard.

These horns are directional, so attention and planning should be made to aim them forward if possible. The enclosed mounting "bracket" is useable only if you are replacing a similar style horn. Please note that you may need to fabricate a custom bracket to mount the horns properly. This is what I needed to do. Also note that these horns are actually quite large and may not fit where thd original horn was mounted. I prefer the slightly smaller 4 inch horn for ease of fitment.

These were installed in a 2007 Ford Escape. I had to remove both inside front fender liners and the front bumper cover to access the original horn. Disassenbly and reassembly took over 4 hours. Fabricating mounts and installing all wiring to and from the horns and relay took a few more hours. It was worth it, but it was a full days work. Plan your time accordingly.

I must note that you must use the included relay or be certain that your own vehicle has a dedicated 15 amp circuit for the original horn. Most will not.
