An update 12/27/09....The week before Christmas I received a replacement knife. After Henkle examining the knife, it was determined to be a manufacturing issue. Excess pressure on rivet caused a fisure crack allowing moisture to slowly migrate into handle ultimatly causing failure. I am glad to have the knife, however it did cost me $40 bucks to buy a replacement to use while I waited for the determination.Original post.......I purchased this knife in March of 2005. I have taken exceptional care of this knife. It's always been hand washed, professionally shapened and cared for. It's a $50 knife afterall...not cheap.The handle literally fell off of each side of the knife while slicing vegetables. I wasn't injured but could have been. The interior steel had rusted and corroded screws that held the handle together. I thought it was riveted. It wasn't properly done..I contacted J.A. Henckels, via email, sending a copy of Amazon's invoice, detailed photos and copy of product description. First I got an Out-of-Office response directing me to email a different address. Both times, I requested a replacement, or a pre paid label so that I might return the knife.They responded with a computer generated pre-formed email: "Thank you for your recent e-mail inquiry concerning Zwilling J.A. Henckels products. You will be pleased to know that all of our products are fully guaranteed against manufacturer's defects in materials and / or craftsmanship. The warranty does not cover wear from normal use, bends, nicks, dents, chips, or any damage resulting from use other than the intended purpose of the item. Wood products, including wood handled knives, are not covered by the Zwilling JA Henckels warranty, as wood is a natural element and thus cannot be guaranteed. We will evaluate your product and should it be under warranty, we will gladly replace the product at no charge. We cannot guarantee that the same line or size will be available therefore it will be replaced under our discretion, with a comparable item or an upgrade." ....verbatum of the warranty statement on their website.It would be nice to actually work with a real person about this issue instead of a computer generated response. I don't think I was asking too much for contact from a person and a pre-paid label sent to me, as I have to package, go to post office and wait in line, mail, and then wait another 4-6 weeks for them to decide my fate with this knife.If you want this knife, buy local so that you can work with an actual person to resolve your problems otherwise, be prepared to wait should it have a manufacturer defect.

Not too heavy not too light. It was perfectly sharpened from right out of the box as well!!! And it has a lifetime warranty!!! I will be looking into buying others from this company as needed plus I will be buying one more of this size as well. I have found if you cook/bake a lot you need 2 knifes this size so you do not have to keep cleaning it as you cook (same thing with measuring spoons and cups. 2 sets are a must). Thanks grandma for that wisdom you past down to me!!!! Again love this product

I bought this because it was a good price and I knew the metal was a quality blade. But was informed that if I bought this it only comes machine sharpened and not as sharp as it could be if hand sharpened. So just what I needed. But I was surprised that the blade was actually very sharp. I used it to make a meal and it cut through everything wonderfully. So now I can practice sharpening on it and have a great extra knife too. Recommended.

    I ordered one of these 8" knives a little over a year ago, and it's been a great knife. Came sharp, was comfortable, well balanced, and it held an edge very well. Unfortunately I recently was shifting a few items, and it fell off the counter, tip down onto my tile floors and bent. Long story short I needed a replacement, and I liked it enough to replace it. It gets to me, and it turns out that I was shipped the classic version instead. I immediately felt a difference in the handle and knew something was up. It's also considerably heavier but equally as balanced. It was washed and put right to use, and it's as just sharp as the original one. I can't wait to put it through its paces. Turns out that sometimes things that seem bad end up being great! I would definitely recommend ensuring you get a classic if you spend the money, but I don't think you'll be disappointed in either.

    My husband has been wanting a HENCKELS knife for a decade, he even went so far as to order a set once but ended up with counterfeits. I was very leery about ordering this for the same reason, but did my research and these are the real deal. The difference was obvious as soon as we got it delivered too. This knife is unbelievable! I've never seen craftsmanship quite like this before. WOW! Worth the money and if you can get one while it's on sale DO IT!!! We got a great deal on ours during Prime days around the holiday and I think we saved 40 or 50 % of what these go for. The knife is incredibly well balanced, sharp, and makes food prep so enjoyable! This knife in particular is a perfect size for my husband, he's pretty tall, and this fits in his grip well. It's really a well made, durable, and beautiful knife. I think we'll be ordering this brand in perpetuity. Like I said, if you can get a good deal - don't miss out!!

    I don't have a lot of experience with NICE knives so this review is from the perspective of someone who has only ever used whatever knives my parents had. Like whatever Costco is selling on a block kinda thing.

    Bought this knife as a gift for my bf and I think it's awesome. It's super sharp, can be used for all kinds of things. I looked up a lot of reviews and articles etc. before going with this knife and I am really really happy with it. My bf loves it. He uses it for everything.

    There's still some resistance when cutting a butternut squash or something like that but it has made preparing food SO MUCH EASIER and SO MUCH SAFER. Plus, I can cut tomatoes without squishing them!
