It's simple. You put in your liquid, any other mixes (powder works best I think...I didn't think chocolate syrup blended as well as it should have) and start it up. There are three modes to it...fast heat (use for hot frothy drinks), slow heat (use for hot drinks with no froth) and a stir/froth only (no heat...more on this mode in a minute).
Now at first glance the rotor seems pretty, well, wimpy. It doesn't spin nearly as fast as a blender. However, in my testing I found it to get the liquid agitated enough to where it actually does a pretty good job mixing stuff up. Nesquik and Milo dissolved nicely with no sludge at the bottom. What's more, if you use a clear liquid (the attached video shows slow mode first, then fast mode) you get a satisfying whirlpool/tornado effect. The stirring serves another effect...it makes the liquid heat up faster (convection being a thing and all...). A full batch took about 12 minutes to come up to temperature, and it's HOT.
Earlier I mentioned the froth-only mode. When I was making a batch of hot chocolate, some of my kids wanted froth, some didn't. So I made the batch with the low/heat mode. After serving the no-froth kids, you can just push the froth-only mode and froth up already-heated liquids. So that's kind of cool.
So for actual operation, it works very well. No complaints there. It's also versatile. For instance, hot chocolate is a given. But I made a pretty darned decent mulled cider in here as well. What's more, the device kept it at temperature, so I could just top off my cider. Making more is pretty easy. So this device is perfect right?
Not so fast.
While on the whole this is quite good, some details deserve mention. For instance, the pitcher is plastic. "Tant, why is that a nit?" I heard someone ask? Well, you're making a variety of drinks in here (the ad copy even says cappuccino is a possibility), and cleaning liquids from plastic can be, er, problematic. I'm thinking mainly that getting, oh, coffee scent out of plastic so your cider doesn't taste like french roast could be an issue.
The design is also curious. At first glance, having a built in measuring cup on the lid is genius. It's a 1/3 cup measure. However, if you look at the ratios given in the instructions, the powder measures are all in 1/4 cup increments. So +10 for a good idea, -12 for consistency.
Lastly, as I mentioned, the liquid gets HOT. A way to control temperature would be welcomed. As it is, you have a choice of HOT or COLD. That's really it.
So on paper this looks great. For use, it's about 80% great I still wish there were a temperature control, as the entire thing feels really dumbed down to me. Or maybe it's me. Regardless, I like it quite a bit and it turned out to be handier than I thought it would be. A good product.
returned first one got another and low and behold same thing happens, buttons have dislodged and are now inside, no way to use. This is cheaply made. Buyer beware
Also, when it arrived, it was not in a packing box. Someone at the warehouse had just slapped a label directly on he Hershey box and shipped it without any padding or packaging materials (remember....this was a Christmas present, so it sucked to give it to someone with a big shipping label on the box -- not the end of the world, but I didn't appreciate it, especially considering that rough shipping may be part of the reason it immediately malfunctioned). On top of all that, when I went to exchange it for another one (because that is specifically what my mother-in-law had asked for and we wanted to replace it for her) they are no longer available. So...thanks to this little device, my mother-in-law got a dud for a Christmas gift that we can't even replace. VERY disappointed in this product.
