Product Description

The Hexbug Larva is a micro robotic creature that slithers forward on smooth surfaces using a slow, rhythmic flexing motion. Just like real larvae, each of these creepy crawlers reacts to its environment, instinctively changing direction upon sensing an object in its path and wriggling off to explore a clear, undisturbed path ahead. Its behavior is eerily mesmerizing to watch and interact with. The Hexbug Larva is CPSIA approved for kids ages 8 and up.The Hexbug Larva features a forward facing infrared sensor that allows it to detect fellow squirming larvae and other objects in its path. When the Hexbug Larva encounters a road block, it spins around on two micro robotic wheels hidden beneath its hard exterior shell and heads off in a new direction. Three button cell batteries are included. Color may vary.

This, the Hexbug Larva, was the third hexbug I bought for my two cats (the first two were the nano and the crab). The Nano was an instant hit, and so was the Larva!

The Larva doesn't move as fast as the Nano, but its larger size, louder sound, and more varied and intentional-seeming motion, make it just as loved by the furry people.

Another big positive is that the Larva seems as durable as the Nano, both being able to stand up to some brutal paw jabs from my two 15lb toms. (Please Note: there are a number of toys that can be safely left with the cats unsupervised, but the Hexbugs aren't among them - partly for the sake of the Hexbugs, but mostly for the cats' sake of course. Externally there's nothing unsafe about these robots, but there's of course the worry of them being broken or bitten into. Btw, choking is far more a worry with the Nano than with the Larva.)

As for battery life, the Larva seems pretty good actually. Its battery certainly won't last as long as the Nano's, but the battery life is perfectly acceptable - especially when you see for yourself how much motion is going on (which is a good thing in a cat toy, i think). Besides, you're likely going to be playing with this in very short bursts, especially if you're of the human persuasion - it's great to watch the cats interacting with it, but unless you're deconstructing it to find out how it works, it would get old very quickly for any non-furry person I would think. Even for the cats, I make sure to let them play with it for 3-4 mins at a time, so I get a number of days out of a battery (if not many sessions).

My cats get the final word: they really complain when I take the Larva and the Nano away! That's a rave review in my book!

Sadly I have to agree that the larva doesn't meet the standards of the other hexbug products. The battery in ours died an hour after we received it, prompting a complete meltdown.

This Larva was delivered with the switch in the 'on' position and the battery was dead. This item appears to be used and sold as new.

These are cute; however the battery life is horrible!!! My son got two for his birthday and the one the batteries already in one of them where bad. The other one the batteries died within a few hours.

Although marketed to children, let's be honest - this is really a cat toy! My cat has a regular Hexbug that he LOVES, but I found that it tips over too easily when batted with a paw and I spend half my time "rescuing" the toy. I thought a larger Hexbug may be more durable for kitten-play. This has great movement, really slithery. But, unlike the regular Hexbug, it's quite loud - I can't really leave this on and forget about it. My cat likes to watch this more than bat it around like the smaller bug. Definitely a fascinating object for a tiny cat, but the noise is an annoyance for humans!

This Larva is the best one yet! It senses very well and when you put two together, they are so cute! My kids like to make a big "cage" for them to move around in by blocking of a space on our floor with blocks. They sense the block "wall" and go another direction. When they sense each other they move away (like a magnet, kindof). Lots of fun and we have great battery life, no problems at all. We buy this one for gifts for friends and they are all equally happy :D

The most durable of the hexes if you have stray toddlers around. Got this to annoy my mom's elderly cat. 2 year old nephew and 16 year old cat following this thing around the wood floor was pretty funny. He stomped on it and threw it a few times, bc you know, it's a bug. Didn't manage to break it. They liked the random, non threatening motion. I liked that it turned around in dark places so I didn't have to fish under the couch to find it.

I wasn't impressed by this. It only really worked for a day before it broke and stopped moving (not even a few hours mind you). I bought it as something fun to get my cats attention and got it for a great price so figured if it didn't work I had nothing to lose. I give it 3 stars because it did get there attention and they loved it while it worked. It was pretty cool too because it really does direct itself when it gets close to walls, furniture or carpet. Just isn't made to last, but fun while it did.
