Replaced a Western Digital Black Caviar with the Hitachi Deskstar. Always liked WD but having to send back two new drives twice in less than 2-years made me think there was a bad batch out there. Don't know if the SATA III v. the SATA II has to do with speed, but the Hitachi is much faster than the WD. Both had the same specs except for the SATA II and SATA III. Had a backup clone I put on the Hitachi, so it should have run at the same speed as the WD but was faster. Very Happy with the Hitachi and will get another one for my other computer.

Because the packaging being the absolute worst ever, I am surprised that this thing survived and booted right up. If it can endure what it probably went through to get to me, then im sure it will be fine with whatever I throw at it.

after reviewing all the drives available hitachi had some of the best reviews. I got the drive quickly and well packed with no signs of damage. The drive loaded quickly and works great as the c drive on my new machine. I have had no troubles with it so far and it runs quietly. windows gives it a 5.9

The HGST Deskstar 3.5" 1 TB SATA 3 32MB is a light weight, low noise, low vibration, low heat and also has a low power consumption that allows you to use a smaller power supply. The hard drives are made by Hitachi Global, but I think Western Digital purchased their operations. The price was right when I purchased (2) @ $89.99 each, now they are cheaper @ $86.63 plus free shipping and handling. I beleive this hard drive is an exellent choice for any person building a new system. Amazon uses a new frustration-free packaging that provides extra protection to delicate electronics, such as mechanical hard drives. I will try to upload some pictures so you can see the two different packings a received. The one with the plastic inserts offers the best protection (basically is like the hard drives are floating in the air), and the other one offers some extra protection but not equal to the first one.

I was trying to find a great hard drive at the lowest possible cost because I am building a mac computer from scratch and need to keep costs down. I was warned against Hitachi from many people and internet reviews, all of which said that Western Digital was the way to go. But they were much more expensive than this was. Later I found out that WD now owns Hitachi, and that Hitachi was supposed to be just as good these days, so I bought it. It was one of the best decisions I've made. Easy to install, lightning fast, and not a glitch for the past month I've been using it. This is definitely worth double the price I paid for it. Thank you Amazon for another amazing deal.

This drive is just what you would expect, one terabyte of solid storage. Plug it into a SATA 6 GB/sec port with a standard SATA cable (all SATA cables are equal) and you have a very fast large drive, perfect for your bulk-storage needs.

I used an SSD for my C: drive and one of these Hitachis as a shared document-storage drive in a desktop machine I built for my brother, and it was a pleasure to install and use---it just works. It is quiet and quick, and for the money you can't go wrong.

Incidentally, if what you'd really like is a 2TB SSD for bulk storage, consider two of these in a RAID 0 configuration (data striped across both disks). That will double both your throughput and cache available to you from that single logical partition. Large files like images or movies will read and write roughly twice as fast as they would from a single disk--not necessarily SSD speeds, but perhaps close. (Just be sure to have a solid backup plan since RAID 0 will fail if either disk does!)

I bought this drive to replace the Seagate Barracuda of the same size that died suddenly. Although the Seagate was a SMART drive, which is supposed to give you a warning that it's failing in time to allow you to back up whatever you needed before it went bye-bye, it didn't. It was working perfectly the night before. Turned it on the next morning, and the platter would not even turn. However, and although I've not run any quantitative tests, the Hitachi is perceptibly slower than the Barracuda was. Not enough that I would return it, but I would probably avoid Hitachi for future drive replacements.

I purchased this because my main hard drive was making noises. I've set it up as a back-up drive. Installed easily and has had no issues.
***** I TAKE THIS BACK!!!!!!!!!!! *****
My warranty on this hard drive expired Oct. 26th. On November 1st my PC started alerting me to a failing drive. Keep in mind that the ONLY use this drive has had is to store back-up files. I assumed that the main original drive was finally failing, but after wasting my entire weekend working on this, it turns out that it's this "new" almost un-used backup drive has failed. And of course it's out of warranty by a WEEK. I do NOT recommend this drive at ALL. I now have to buy a new drive and I can guarantee you that it will not be this one.
