The product arrived very fast and ahead of the estimated arrival. Using this hard drive as a simple backup is fine. The Life Studio software checks all the drives connected to the computer and arranges the files by date. I disconnected one of my hard drives and thumbnails were still displayed. I had to delete the thumbnails by hand.

I have deleted other files and the associated thumbnails but the images in Life Studio are still displayed. When checked it says they are in a recycler folder but the folder seems to be nonexistant. I will have to call support to find out what is happening.

The Life Studio software cannot be turned off or disabled. One is also not able to search by Drive or folder which I think should be a natural function.

I work with animation and I have 1000's of images and 100's of movies so I thought this would be a "cool" addition when searching for files and might speed up my search. I will use it on a limited bases.

I don't care about the social functions available and have not used any of these functions.

I also have not used the auto backup included with this drive.

If you don't need or want control over where this hard drive searches maybe this will be ok with you.

If you want control over what this HD lists and shows this is not for you.

I bought 2TB so that I could reorganize 3 smaller external hard drives and share the files between Mac and PC/s (win 7). Software installed properly on Mac, as well as PC.

The software is interesting- makes it easier to review images, if you are not very organized about it in the first place. It groups images and documents by date, which is rather lame. It does not display the folders I have already made and stored things in, rendering the software useless for my purposes (luckily, I have Adobe Bridge).

I can bypass the software on my PC and display the drive normally to move stuff on and off. On my Mac, that feature is disabled when the software is installed- so I took it off.

Now I can use it the way I wanted to- as a storage unit.

For the price I could not beat these. In reality, I just needed the drives out of these... wasn't looking for an external unit. Bought these tore them apart and used the drives. Seems good quality as the cases were a bit of a pain to open. Drives are really decent... no issues to report so far.

Piece of junk. wonderful advertising, but can get the darned thing to work. Requested tech support for the third ime and waiting for a response. Worked for awhile, but did not pick up all files. Now just sits there with a" finding files " memo. I can't even find my files anymore to see what is there although I mentally know they are on the drive. Don't waste your money. Must add that I can not even get any response from Coral.

The upright design makes it a lot easier to knock over than standard external hard drives which lie on their side. It doesn't even make it take up that much less space on a desk - there is literally no advantage that I can see to it besides it looking pretty. Since it has a power cord (which is standard for hard drives of this size) there is always a risk of someone or something accidentally tugging on it, causing it to fall over and damage the disk if it is running. I had to transfer all my files off in order to do a disk repair because my Timeline partition (mac's backup software) was damaged in just such an incident. It's working fine now, but fixing it was very time consuming and I lost access to all my previous backups through timeline.

The life studio software is annoying. I ended up going into terminal and disabling it with a tutorial I found online. I don't like that it automatically mounted the software EVERY TIME I PLUGGED IN THE HARD DRIVE. It also has a process (LSBackground) that continually runs in the background (even when the HD isn't plugged in) which randomly eats up CPU without really accomplishing anything worthwhile. I'm working on figuring out how to disable that too without having to go into activity monitor and manually shutting i down every time I restart my com. I think it's because of Hitachi online backup - it sounded like a good idea to have a backup in the cloud, but its honestly not worth the effort. It ran out of space after just a few months, so I keep getting annoying emails about there not being any more storage space available unless I pay a yearly fee.

The icing the cake is that both of those things (the upright design and the annoying software) are considered "features", so it costs the same as Western Digital's 2 TB drive.

I have owned my 1 TB hard drive for a few days so I cannot review the stability of the drive. However, all I had to do was to connect the drive to an electrical outlet and connect it to the computer. The drive did not power on until it was connected to both the electrical outlet and the computer and as long as the unit is connected to the power sources, the white power light remains lit. The light is very small and to me it is not that bright.

My computer added the software that is located on the Hitachi drive first before it added the hardware, the drive. The drive shows up as one letter and the software shows up as another letter. The drive arrived as 32 bit so I copied the software to another drive, deleted the partition and created a new partition in which my drive was created prior to creating a new partition. I did this several times because the software remained on the Hitachi drive even after I reformatted the drive. Then I notice that the software is recognized as a CD-Rom and a UDF file system which may explain why I could not delete the software. The software takes up 295 MB of space leaving the drive with 931.07 GB of space or 99 percent free space.

I am able to copy and paste files on the drive without using the software just as you would do with almost any drive. You are able to click on the drive without the software popping up. I did not use or add the software nor do I have intentions at the present to use it. However, these things are listed on the software's menu, Get Ready to Relive, Automatic Organization, Stunning 3D Browsing, Local and Online Backup, Instant Sharing (Facebook, and two other icons as I cannot recognize the other two icons), Install Lifestudio, Learn More, and Formatting. The software is powered by Cooliris.
