There's a much smaller file, around 400 mb I believe it was, that will NOT do the trick for a new HD. - Your drive must have 2 GB of free space and it must be FAT32. I tried this on a 1 GB FAT32 drive, no luck. Tried on a 500 GB external drive, but it wasn't FAT so no luck. Formatted that drive to FAT32 and finally had success. - Toss that 870+ mb file on the drive in a folder named UPDATE within PS4. So it should be Drive -> PS4 -> UPDATE -> file Be sure to backup your PS4 as it definitely is a huge help especially in regards to system settings if you tweaked those, and if you're a Plus user your saves should be in the cloud but always a good idea to have a 2nd backup. In regards to performance of the drive, it's decent. I don't notice a drastic increase in read speed from the PS4, but there is a noticeable difference when loading up those larger titles like Final Fantasy. The hard drive presently in the PS4 is also a HGST Travelstar, but is a 5400RPM drive. Please note after replacing the drive, you will need a USB thumb drive that is at least 1GB in order to download Sony's firmware and install it on your new drive. Without a USB thumb drive you will not be able to install the OS. Also note, that before doing the below you will need to format your thumb drive to FAT32. It will not work in NTFS format. To make the USB drive compatible, you'll want to add a "PS4″ folder to the freshly formatted USB drive and then put an "UPDATE" folder inside. Drop the firmware you downloaded from Sony into the UPDATE folder and insert the USB drive into the powered down PS4. Then you can start the installation procedure by booting the PS4 with a special 7 second long (or more) press of the power button. With that, the PlayStation should recognize the drive and start the installation. Just make sure you select "Reinstall System Software". The installation of the OS should take about five minutes from start to finish. After that point you'll need to start fresh with your PS4 -- connect to wireless again, add your PSN account, redownload your games, etc., but everything should go by very quickly since you'll be rocking this new drive. Installation of the hard drive was quick and easy, but I ran into many error messages(CE-30774-1) when reinitializing the firmware. Here are a couple of tips I picked up from various websites while I contemplated throwing my "bricked" ps4 out the window.. 1) Don't over tighten the screws holding the hard drive into the ps4. Too tight might cause an issue for some reason.... 2) Make sure you are downloading the correct firmware(~707mb as of July 26, 2014) from the Playstation site. 3) Format your usb drive to FAT32. This is the default setting, but good to know... 4) Make sure to push the usb drive all the way into the ps4. I had to firmly push it in. I bought to upgrade a 500GB drive that I had previously installed in the optical bay of my 2011 MacBook Pro. Some of these vintage MacBooks have issues with the newer SATA III 6G interface and mine was one of them. However, by using a tool available for download from HGST, I was able to change the setting of this drive to SATA II/3G and it is working perfectly now. Glad I bought this drive because most other manufacturers don't have the ability to change this setting and wouldn't have worked.

Bang for buck, the best HDD upgrade for the PS4!

June 2017 EDIT/UPDATE: I purchased a PS4 Pro last month that comes with a 1 Terabyte 5400 RPM Toshiba drive. I'm not a fan of 5400 RPM drives in general, so I went ahead and purchased another HGST Travelstar to upgrade my Pro to something a bit speedier. I also bought my friend a used PS4 Slim that has 5400 RPM rated HGST drive. I gave him the 1 Terabyte Toshiba but I benchmarked all 3 drives to see what kind of differences in read/write speeds were. The results were not surprising, the HGST wins hands down.

Original October 2015: Nearly 2 years after buying my launch PS4, I decided it was time to give it a bit of an upgrade on the HDD for not only more room for games though I still buy physical copies as im an old school gamer, but also to give it a slight boost in loading speeds depending on games after seeing comparison tests across the web.

Granted the 5400RPM vs 7200RPM difference is not very big in most games, a few seconds shaved off in games like Assassins Creed Black Flag, Shadow of Mordor and Resident Evil vs I saw no difference in Grand Theft Auto 5 sadly. I timed the difference with my smartphones stop watch before and after upgrade. But then again, even SSD's arn't a huge improvement either due to some type of hardware limit Sony put on the system board. I couldn't even hear the HDD working with my ear next to PS4 and I felt no heat difference or vibration increases either, so no worries there

Pros:
1. Great price for what you get
2. HGTS is essentially Western Digital now and drive has 3 warranty which is pretty good and they even advertise this drive for PS4 usage
3. Slight speed boost in loading times in SOME games
4. Very quiet, basically inaudible
5. Hardly any heat increase
6. No vibration increase
7. Will last you years unless your a total game storage hog

Cons:
1. Your not gonna see a huge decrease in game loading times despite the 7200RPM boost
2. Could be cheaper for only being 1 terabyte
3. Game install rips will still be limited to Blu Ray drive which is SLOOOWWW
4. Would have been nice to have a 2 terabyte model
5. It sucks losing around 130 gigs due to PS4 file system and PS4 OS firmware
6. Don't expect SSD or Hybrid drive performance results for obvious reasons

Best upgrade for my PS4!

Most of my games are digital and this hard drive cuts some loading in seconds.

I have been playing The Last Of Us Remastered, Batman Arkham Knight, and Black Ops 3 and the loading-time is reduced!
From my experience in this game, I got from 30 seconds down to maybe 10-17seconds loading time in Black Ops 3. Last Of Us loads very fast, no more than 10 seconds in any type of loading in the game. On Batman can't remember how long I used to wait but it does feel faster than before.
For $59.99 can't go wrong and it's a 1TB!

Best PS4, big storage you can buy.

Bought this for my PS4 slim and dang I am happy with the results. Most of my games are downloaded, and with this drive I am legitimately the first person to enter multi-player games after a round ends. I have been playing Battlefield 1 for a bit now and I load most maps in a matter of 25 seconds or less, compared to the nearly 60 seconds with the factory HDD. I'm first or shortly after 2nd, but 1st 90% of the time. I also have one of these in my gaming laptop. I have all my backup files, music, videos, pictures and a bunch of games on it and it is blazingly fast compared to most other drives. I've done the research and this is likely the fastest 2.5in HDD out there. I've had my laptop drive for a year or so and it's yet to have issues.

Is a great drive, but not sure I made the right choice buying it for a NAS

Is inside my NAS (DS1515+) now.
Is being held back by the other drives there (not all my drives are ultrafast like this one).
The drive is working mighty fine, even though is 512e.
Nonetheless, I would not buy it again for NAS (Please onderstand this is MY fault, and only mine, and represents no problem with the disk)

But for a PC (wehre one can realign the partitions) or an enclosure, sure enough, would recomend it wholeheartedly.
