HelioSeal Delivers Twice the Capacity Using One-Quarter Less Power. One-third more capacity and 23% lower energy consumption. Available today. That's the power of helium. Delivering the industry's leading capacity at 8TB, Ultra star He8 is based on the widely accepted and proven HelioSeal platform. HelioSeal technology replaces air with helium inside the drive, reducing air turbulence and enabling 7Stac, a seven-disk design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor. Ultra star He8 goes beyond what any air-based HDD can do and seamlessly integrates into virtually any mainstream enterprise environment. Cooler and quieter with industry-leading power efficiency (Watts/TB) and no-compromise performance, the Ultra star He8 lays the foundation for future growth in massive scale-out environments. TCOptimized - Increasing Storage Efficiency to Drive Down Data Center TCO. Ultra star He8 provides the best TCO value proposition and delivers greater storage efficiency with breakthroughs in capacity, power efficiency and best-in-class performance. This latest HelioSeal hard drive achieves up to 3X higher random write performance than the prior generation , Ultra star He6, thanks to HGST media cache architecture, a disk-based caching technology. He8 offers a 12Gb/s SAS (6Gb/s SATA) interface for easy integration into high performance data centers. New features like Rebuild Assist dramatically reduce RAID rebuild times and maintain system performance during the rebuild process. Data Security with Industry-Leading Quality and Reliability. Compliance and privacy requirements drive the need for increased data security. Ultra star He8 offers security and encryption options to protect data from unauthorized use. Instant Secure Erase (ISE) models expedite drive redeployment and retirement. Encryption models protect data with hardware-based encryption, including a Trusted Computing Group (TCG) option with FIPS 140-2 certification, Level 2.

Some people say that this drive is quiet, and others say that the seek is noticeable. The acoustic profile is typical, around 35 dBA and you can hear the seek in a quiet room. The sound won't bother anyone in an enterprise setting, but I wouldn't recommend it for a home theater PC or a quiet library/study setting.
There are 14 different variations of the He8 drive to choose from, so it can get confusing which one to buy. This HUH728080ALE600 is the most typical option for the majority of desktop computers. This model has a SATA interface, 512e format, and the encryption circuit for Instant Secure Erase.
512e (emulated) Format allows backwards compatibility with Advanced Format 4K capability for current and past operating systems. The operating systems and applications that fully support 4Kn (native) are not as common yet, so 512e is a safe bet if you're not sure.
Instant Secure Erase allows the drive to be wiped instantly when it is put to another use. Because the encryption chip is very fast, it has the same high performance as the regular Secure Erase drive (which would require traditional time consuming overwriting to securely erase).
Here are the different codes in the model #s:
Includes ALE = SATA 512e Format
Includes AL5 = SAS 512e Format
Includes ALN = SATA 4Kn Format
Includes AL4 = SAS 4Kn Format
Ending with 200, 600 = Instant Secure Erase
Ending with 204, 604 = Secure Erase
Ending with 201 = TCG Encryption
Ending with 205 = TCG FIPS Encryption
Ending with 601 = BitLocker Drive Encryption
After receiving this hard drive, I quickly partitioned it using GPT and formatted it using NTFS format. After formatting, it comes down to about 7.27TB. It's still big! Next I did the dreaded surface scan test to scan for any weak/damaged/bad sectors. It took about 14+ hours to complete using a 3rd party software (Hard Disk Sentinel). I also have HGST's hard drive check tool (WinDFT) but their software sucks as it doesn't really give you that much visuals and statistics on the progress of the scan versus Hard Disk Sentinel so I didn't use it. Plus, I didn't have enough time to wait another 14+ hours to check the drive.
I'm pleased to say that after my checks, it came back that the hard drive is in pristine condition! No weak/damaged/bad blocks/sectors at all! Hard Disk Sentinel and Speccy also showed that the hard drive I received is indeed brand new and never been used as evidenced by the start and power on count. That is good to know that I'm really receiving a brand new hard drive! Using ATTO Disk Benchmark, I'm getting a top read speed of 197+ MB/s and top write speed of 172+ MB/s. That's fast for a HDD! This test was also done after I have already cloned my old drive to this new HGST 8TB drive. I used AOMEI Partition Assistant Pro (It's free! Google it!) to do the cloning and it did it flawlessly! Just make sure you unplug the old cloned drive afterwards when you reboot. You might need to change the drive letter again of the new drive to the old one (e.g. if old one is drive D: before, and the new one is Drive G:, you will probably need to change the new one to D: again). This is what happened in my case but after that, everything is A-ok! My Steam launcher opened up with no problem. Same with my Uplay and Origin launcher apps that is also cloned to this new 8TB drive. No link or missing path errors encountered.
Now I'm using my old WD RE 4TB Enterprise HDD as the main data drive that houses my Documents, Music, Desktop, Videos, Downloads, and Pictures folders. This is still a very reliable drive but I have noticed it slowed down a little bit throughout the years. Before the max read speed was about 186+ MB/s but now it has come down to 148+ MB/s. It's still fast but as you can see, there's a dramatic drop. I keep records of my benchmarks and I compare them from time to time. I usually do benchmarks of any hard drive, GPU, CPU, and RAMs when I first install it so I can compare it later on. I must say though, my Samsung 840 Pro SSD is still running like a beast after all these years even with about 16.01TB+ of data that has been written/re-written on it according to Hard Disk Sentinel.
I know this is a very expensive hard drive and its probably overkill for what I use it for but I like reliable hardware. This hard drive is not only fast and reliable (2+ million hours MTBF rating & 5-year limited warranty), but also sports the new tech HelioSeal plus its one of the highest capacity drive you can buy in its class. This is an enterprise hard drive which is rated for 24/7 nonstop use. I have tons of games in my Steam library. I need a big capacity hard drive that's not only fast but also reliable so that my game files doesn't get corrupted. This hard drive fits the bill perfectly!
On the bright side, the drives were sealed and had ZERO hour power on. But, I absolutely want my HGST warranty.
I was religiously buying the Toshiba drives, which I have the best experience with. The only reason I tried a HGST is that I needed a 8 TB drive when Toshiba wasn't offering one.
