This tray makes smaller balls than a lot of the other brands. These are bigger than a regular ice cube, but still small enough that you can use in a glass of ice tea with a straw. If you are looking for giant balls for whisky, you might want to skip this one. But normal every day use - perfect size.
The only problem I have with this tray is that it is wiggly. My other silicone tray were small enough to palm it in one hand, leaving the other hand free to open the freezer and move stuff around. This one makes 10 cubes, so it is longer and if you hold it in the middle, the ends sag just enough to spill a little water. But if you hold it on just one end, you might lose the whole thing. Maybe I will get the hang of it, but as of now, I spilled a little water all three times that I put it in the freezer. I'm not too worried about it, as my floors and the bottom of my freezer are not pristine, so I don't care if a little water gets down there (and it really is a very small amount of water.) But, if that will drive you crazy, see if you can find a silicon tray with less cubes.
The trick is to fill the bottom portion to the brim, then just press the top section down on top, squirting the extra water out of the holes on top. Dab the sides of the tray dry, and put it in the freezer. It's pretty easy and works well. Just make sure to do it over the sink or on a towel, as some water will escape your tray (it's supposed to happen, don't worry).
I think the people who gave it one star must be trying to fill it via the tiny holes, which absolutely won't work and defies common sense. If you follow my basic instructions, you'll get 10 ice balls every 4-6 hours (depending on your freezer temperature, I suppose), each about the size of a regular ice cube.
Trust me, if you fill it correctly, it's great.
But as a fair warning... My baby started eating a lot of solids fairly quickly where she would eat 3 cubes (or 6 tsp or 2 tbsp or 1 oz) each sitting. So I ended up buying the Tevolo perfect cube silicone ice trays that freezes 1 oz of baby food per cube. But every baby is different... So don't eat a lot of a while and some take to eating fast. But I am still glad I got these HIC ice trays because I'm sure I will use them again on my next baby.
But if you are looking to use these as actual ice cube trays, they are pretty pointless because they are just too small.
My only beef with the design is the lack of any rigid support. Had the manufacturer thought to sell it with a small rigid plate to place the tray on for transport to the freezer, then I would have given it 5 stars. Other than having to find your own little plate to fit under this tray, I think it's perfect.
The frame is fairly sturdy though the silicone is fairly thin compared to other molds I have. I'll keep it but I don't know what I'll use it for.
