HIFIMAN Edition S
Ultra Performance. Ultra Portable.
HIFIMAN is an established market leader in full-size planar magnetic headphones as well as in-ear phones. The missing piece in the puzzle has been an on-ear model. That is, until now.
Enter Edition S, an on-ear model worthy of the HIFIMAN name.
Design by HIFIMAN Design Team from Boston, MA USA
Open/Closed Back Design
HIFIMAN gives you the best of both worlds with an on-ear headphone that can go from one mode to the other simply by adding (or removing) the logo cap on the ear cup.

Two things I should add. I bought the AudioQuest Dragonfly Black for $100 and they do help the sound a lot - I suppose my review is based on this $100 add on. And...I have a pair of SHURE 535 earbuds that cost twice this price and they are fantastic...but I'm not sure they are as pleasurable or musical a listening experience.
Of course the unique feature of these headphones is the fact that they can convert from closed to open headphones. This makes them great on the go and great at home. As you would expect, the sound is a bit better in the open configuration, imaging and soundstage improves the most, but overall they just sound a bit warmer, less congested and more airy as open headphones.
This isn't to say they sound bad closed, far from it they're some of the best closed headphones you can buy for less than $500. Bass is strong with good extension, but never over the top, it's never muddy and it never compromises the other frequencies. Mids are smooth and detailed, present but not forward. The highs are well extended, not quite as smooth when closed as when open, but I wouldn't call them harsh by any means.
Build quality seems good, lots of plastic but it seems to be high quality plastic. There are portable headphones that feel more premium, like the Denon AH-MM400 or Oppo PM-3, but having heard both I'm confident in saying that these sound better and they're more comfortable, with the added benefit that when you get home you can take off the back covers and have an excellent pair of open headphones for quiet listening. All that and they cost less than the Denons or Oppos. The only area of any "weakness" is probably isolation, they only offer maybe 70% of the isolation of your average closed headphones. It was good enough to use at a comfortable volume in public, so I didn't mind.
Bottom line, buy these headphones!
I was looking for a quality headphone to introduce myself to the world of headphones and initially went with the Audio Technica M40x based on the many many reviews saying how awesome they were, especially for the price. Upon arrival and testing, I found that I was actually not a fan of the sound of the M40x. It is to my understanding that they are a very accurate set of headphones, perhaps too accurate for my liking as the highs were quite harsh to me and made some of my favorite songs difficult to listen to. Maybe I got a bad set, maybe I just wasn't used to "quality" sound, either way, I sent them back.
After watching Z Review's (a huge help throughout this process) video about the Edition S I decided to see if I could find a good deal on them as they seemed to be just what I was looking for after learning more about my taste in sound from my experience with the M40x. Found a great deal on a "damaged box" set and waited patiently for their arrival.
When I put the Hifimans on I was like, "OH YES!"
My untrained ear is not really able to tell much of a difference between closed and open settings, but I guess that's a good thing as I will not be disappointed when I have to use them in the closed position based on the environment I find myself in. I was afraid that a set of headphones that got rid of the sibilance I had experienced with the Audio Technicas would also get rid of some other sounds that I actually wanted to stay. Thankfully the Hifimans got rid of the harshness while also presenting me with a sound quality better than any other I have ever experienced (remember, I'm just getting started with this entire headphone lifestyle and haven't gotten a chance to try many out).
Comfort: Over ear fit for me. Snug and comfortable, however, my left ear makes contact with the part that is in front of the driver. Kind of annoying at times, not a deal breaker for me.
Build Quality: The headband is a hard plastic and I can see how it is prone to snapping. The entire construction seems to be a bit fragile but I do not see them breaking as long as they are taken care of. They do not feel cheap though, it's a bit of a mid point between feeling fragile and premium.
Wire: I have had no problems with it, the controls work well for me.
I currently connect them directly to my Samsung Note 5 and they get plenty loud enough without the use of an amp which is great for portability.
These do not receive the amount of attention they deserve, I find any excuse I can to use them.
