HiFiMan's HE-400 is an extremely responsive headphone at an affordable price. It uses planar magnetic drivers, which are like a scaled down version of electrostatic panel speakers that fit your head. They are lightweight and boast 92.5 dB efficiency, allowing the HE-400 to be driven by virtually any source component, including an iPod.

In the pictures you can see the modifications that I have done to the HE-400 and HE-400i, haven't done the grill mod on the HE-560 yet. The HE-400 also has a custom made pad for the headband that really makes it comfortable, no problems falling a sleep with them on.
At the current price of $299, this is a real bargain, only down side is the DAC/AMP should be some what decent for these to perform their best.
I generally use an amp for my larger headphones, and these need one. They are extremely well made, have removable pads, and fit well. The headband allows hours of comfortable wearing. They do not isolate well from my environment, and do leak a lot of sound outside of my ears, but I am completely satisfied with them.
Pay attention to the cables that are used on these. They are quite different, and you will not be able to swap with the normal cables. They are heavy and fairly stiff, and each one screws in to the ear cup. I used a very small adjustable wrench to snug them up tightly, and they have not loosened.
I have found sources for both new ear pads and cables, but the cables are quite expensive. Over $100 generally and much more if you want to spend
more. Right here on Amazon you can find them in fact.
I am a bit of a headphone collector, and have a number of good ones that i have paid this much for, or less. These are far and away my favorites. I can't justify spending more than $400 on headphones, and these are a bargain at a lower price point. I think finding tis much quality and great sound for $300 would be quite difficult.
