*Please note this is review using the 9005 bulb for HIGH BEAM application for my 2013 Subaru WRX in a halogen reflector bowl. I needed a bright bulb that I can turn on & off; can't do that with my HID's without risking damage over time. LED was really my option at this point.
The bulbs came in a compact box but professionally packaged with cutout foam. The installation is as easy as replacing the halogen bulbs. It has a very tight fit which is also a good thing. All I needed was couple zip ties to keep the small ballast and wire tucked in. It's small overall but built really well. I cannot hear the fan noise even when it's on. Not sure why people say it's loud but I've had no issues with heat or any dimming of the light either.
<<Two Caps on the Bulbs>>
The 9005 version comes with the black cap on tip of the bulbs. I found out if you leave the cap on (screw on) then you have a spot like beam pattern. If you take off the cap, then it becomes more of a flood pattern. Beam pattern will differ likely depending on the bulb and the design of your application. I left mine on to have more spot like pattern for better distance view which does make a big difference.
The output color is indeed pure white. No blue/purple color at all which I love. I literally gasped "OMG" when I first turned it on with my HID's (Morimoto Elite 50W) seeing the brightest white spots (will upload photos later). There's no warm up time with these. It's instant.
Now comes the fun part. When I say I can shine top of the tree is no joke. With the high beam it floods the area with bright white light. There's a road I drive few times a night that's straight & 3/4 mile long where I was able to reflect the small mile marker sign 1/2 mile away. Now I'm not saying it lights up all 1/2 mile but you get the idea when it comes to spotting a deer, every bit of light helps. I live in an area where there are no street lights on many of the back roads or it's very dim this light really shines the sides further as well as objects much further away.
It's so bright, even during the day you can see the light reflect off signs nearby. Large signs though it's almost too bright at night when you're driving by it. Even if I had HID's as my high beams this LED is MUCH brighter.
I'm VERY impressed with this product and the light output with the XHP50 that of course now looking to see what the performance will be like with the XHP70 which is not as common as it seems. I wouldn't mind couple spot fog lamps using either product. Some people pay $40-$50/pair for those 'high performance' halogen bulb that doesn't last long with a much lower lumen intensity. I don't write these reviews if I didn't believe in the product either (yes I paid full price for this product). I'll have to test to see how this product works with the H9/H11 application in the projector housing down the road otherwise.
While the photo looks very narrow with the HID's, the picture was taken with Viofo A119 from Amazon (Spy Tech) and it's 160 degrees. The HID's are Morimoto Elite 55W with 5500K bulb roughly 4,200 lumens. The top photo is just the HID and of course the bottom is with the XHP50 high beams turned on. The photo doesn't do it justice as the dash cam had the wide dynamic range on so was offsetting the bright foreground but I could see much further than this. Still tells you how wide the beam pattern alone is. I literally have 180 degree light near me and the distance is quite good.
It blows any halogen high beams out of water. When people use it in front of me I couldn't believe how dim they are in comparison. There's just no comparison especially with the distance the LED bulbs can throw.
***Additional Information Regarding Projector***
I had a friend who had the H11 for the main headlight that use projector lamp. When inserted into the projector lamp and saw a sharp cutoff that actually had more broad light than the HID's, it seemed dim. So we took one LED on one side and HID and took my light meter and the LED was dimmer. Just to confirm, we swapped with the other LED and same result. There's some optic design that these LED's don't work well with the projector at least with the Subaru's. While I can't say the result will be the same for every halogen projector lamp out there and no testing done with the OEM HID projectors, we were a bit disappointed with the halogen projector test.
Do Note the Following:
- I drove around in my local area for 30 minutes and no cars flashed me to signal that the lights are to bright
- I wish that the video quality was better to really showcase the distance visibility differences
- Increased wide viewing angle compared to the OEM Halogen Bulb.
I hope my video helps all future buyers!
Changing those ugly yellow OEMs to these pure white LEDs were the best thing I did. It complements the rest of the front of the car beautifully. It also has increased the night time visibility significantly.
These puppies sitting in projector bulb makes my accord luxury car to on coming traffics and turns heads.
I have had them installed for about 2 weeks now with no problems. If anything changes, will surely update the review.
