I got this card for $299 during an HIS promotion period. Just three weeks later AMD announces price cut for HD7K cards. Still I don't feel bad since the price after the cut is also $299.

The card performs well in games. After five years I finally maxed out in Crysis. However it fails to maintain 50+ framerate in BF3 with Ultra presets. In Close Quarters maps framerate easily drop to sub-40 range which results in perceivable lag. This is quite disappointing since an old Fermi GTX570 does better job.

What it can offer while an older card definitely cannot is ultra low power consumption. While official rated TDP is 190W, you will probably never see this card eating that much. I'm not an overclocking guy but I go for the opposite: undervolting. Stock voltage is 1216mV and the lowest possible load voltage is 1156mV so there is a 60mV room for undervolting. That doesn't sound much but it actually saves 30W! Overall system power draw in Furmark is 200W with a 3.6GHz quad-core Ivy Bridge and 80+Bronze PSU, you can see just how power efficient 28nm cards are.

If you do overclock, this card serves well. 1200/5000MHz is no problem at stock voltage (which is better than reference). However you will stop there since the highest load voltage is locked at 1216mV unless you do some volt-modding.

What HIS is really proud of is the cooling system. I strongly agree with such claim and to be honest this is the best VGA cooling solution out there. It is a hybrid of blower and open air configuration. Most of the hot air is expelled by the blower while some circulates into the case. Result? As cool and quiet as an open air cooler while not affecting other components significantly. Max temp in Furmark is 69C during which the fan spins at only 1900rpm.

After a failed XFX video card upgrade, I did some solid research to find a reliable replacement. Newegg offered an amazing deal on this HIS IceQ 7870 and after reading good reviews, I decided to give it a shot. This is my first outing with HIS and if the first month of constant use is any indicator, it will not be my last!

Right away I noticed the packaging. It features incredible design and aesthetics both inside and out. The item was well packed and included all sorts of goodies including a Crossfire bridge, a video adapter, a HIS case sticker, install manual and software/driver CD. Typically the software is something I don't install, as I prefer to use CCC. In this case, I decided to give it a go though and I am glad I did! Trust me, the HIS utility is notably good. It is compact, uses minimal resources and allows for full control over your card: fan, power, overclock, monitoring - you name it! I was a bit overwhelmed by the size of the card though and had to shuffle a hard drive to another bay to get it to fit in my case. The IceQ cooler performs well but it is a monster! Be sure you have some room, because if you have a crammed PCI-E area or a smaller case this card may be a no go for you.

I proceeded to test the card with Furmark and some games, including Tomb Raider. The performance was excellent. It scored well and posted very reasonable temps, never going above 70C during full load while gaming. Using the HIS utility I gave the card an overclock to 1100 on the core and 1275 on the memory. The performance increase was quite nice! The Furmark burn-in score jumped nicely and my FPS went up about 5-6 on average.

As mentioned, this is my first HIS Radeon card. I can't speak to its longevity yet but this is an outstanding start.

So far I just want to express how different this card is from normal HD 7870's. This card comes equipped already with an amazing heat-sink and fan combo unique to the HIS brand 7870. Although you may think only 1 fan isn't enough, but It surprisingly gets the job done (I won't explain the engineering on it).

So far the card has been playing all the games i'm throwing at it, and the most recently is modded skyrim. I have installed a number of mods to make Skyrim's Ultra graphics look like medium/low graphics :). So far with this extra load the graphics card still performs at about 20-30 fps. Which to some, may not be playable. However, to me, It works just fine. Also, its skyrim, so its not like its a competitive game like call of duty, where it might actually matter.

Anyways, for its price (i picked it up for $160), this card is a good buy. Would definitely recommend.

I purchased this when it was on special for $220 and performance-wise, it was excellent. Unfortunately, the fan rattled and was very noisy at certain RPMs. Further investigation on the web showed that this is a common problem on a number of these cards. The fan appears to be off-balance and at certain speeds, it rattles because it's not rotating properly on the bearing.

Amazon was excellent though in replacing the card not once, but twice. Truly great service. Am currently waiting for the third card and hopefully I'll finally strike it lucky. I live outside of the US and it is comforting to know that the risks of buying from Amazon is not that different from buying locally.

Note that this is a pretty long card but should fit most modern cases these days. Apart from the occasional faulty fan, the cooler is brilliant at keeping temps low. Overall, a great card at $220 at the time of writing.
