For me, the calibration with a screw driver really put me off. This meter does away with that. You use push bottoms to calibrate the meter and after that its dip and check.

The hold feature is nice, dip the meter in the solution, press hold then remove it for a closer look. Very nice for those of us with glasses.

From what i have seen of this meter, I have to give it 5 stars simply because its well made and works like its supposed to.

I just got into the hobby of hydroponics, and it seemed as though I was going to need an EC meter to keep from burning my plants, so I did a little research and with my budget, this one seemed to fit. It's simple, and easy. It's also accurate, and worked from the get-go. No complaints so far. Just turn on, dip in the water, and it gives you an instant reading.

I used this meter three times with perfectly acceptable results. The fourth time I used it the temperature read correctly but the TDS (measured in any of the modes) measured 0.0. I have rinsed it in distilled water and recalibrated it, but it will not give me a proper TDS reading. I sent the seller a message through the HM Digital website but after a week have heard nothing back. If this gets resolved I will update this review. Otherwise, very disappointed in the product and the lack of response.

UPDATE: I have since heard back from HM Digital (literally hours after I posted the above review). They asked me to return the defective product (which they confirmed to be defective upon receipt) and replaced it and included a free bottle of calibration solution. I was happy with how they handled the defective unit and feel like I was compensated fairly for the situation. Good companies make mistakes but find a way to make it right. HM Digital seems to be that kind of company.

I purchased my COM-100 meter well over a year ago, in Feb 2012, and its performance to date has been flawless. I purchased a bottle of the 1000 ppm calibration solution along with the meter. To date every test I've made of the meter's accuracy has been right on the money without a need to adjust calibration, and I'm still on the original batteries. I use this meter primarily for testing the ppm of the ionic colloidal silver I make at least monthly. I also use it for testing the ppm in my home water, hot and cold, and purified water produced by my reverse osmosis machine. The RO machine takes my home water @ 350 ppm and purifies it down to <20 ppm. I can also tell when the RO filters need changed out by watching the ppm count slowly rise over time. Frankly, this little TDS meter has proven to be very valuable for allowing me to monitor and control the quality of water and colloidal silver I use. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to purchase such an instrument.. For me, it works GREAT...

Update: 1 Feb 2014

I continue to frequently use this meter for checking TDS/ppm on: faucet water, RO unit water, swimming pool water, rain water, roof runoff water, steam distilled water, and even colloidal silver I've brewed. I also purchased HM's 1000 ppm TDS test solution that I use occasionally to retest the accuracy.. I've never had to recalibrate it. This is a great test instrument that appears to be quite tough and highly accurate. I've had it almost two years and have yet to replace the battery. My recommendation is BUY IT...

I purchased this item about a year ago and discovered, as others have indicated, the batteries do not last (at least on some units). I don't know exactly how long they lasted, but noticed that after storing the unit without use for about 3 weeks and then trying to use the unit, the batteries had gone dead. I recently took some current measurements and discovered that upon turning the unit on it consumed about 0.65 to 0.75 milliamps and when turning the unit off the current dropped to about 0.26 milliamps when it should have gone to zero. I then discovered that pressing the TEMP/CAL button (with the unit turned ON) reduced the current draw to about 0.45 milliamps, and then turning the unit OFF the current dropped to zero as it should. I repeated this procedure multiple times and it was always repeatable. I now replaced the batteries in the unit and will see if this actually works to save the batteries. Those of you who are having battery problems may want to try to press the TEMP/CAl button after turing the unit ON and hopefully when you turn it OFF the current draw will drop to zero and save your batteries. Hope this works for you who are having this problem. Other than that, the unit seems to work fine but the battery problem is a major, major flaw, hence only one star rating.

Purchased this when I installed an R.O. system under the sink. Our (city) water quality is terrible, ranging from 350 to 498 ppm. The EPA states that 500 ppm is considered hazardous. This tester lets me test how good the R.O. system is working & when it's time to change the filters. The R.O. will drop the PPM count to as little as 1 or 2 when the filters are new & as we approach 50 we know it's time to change the filters. The "hold" feature is really nice.

Since then I've tested the water at several places, including different brands of bottled water (some of which should not be sold at all).
