And yes, after startup, there is no odor. First time, yes, but only at startup thereafter. Almost as good as the discontinued DC-100.
Today, I replaced the wick for the first time. Well, it's NOT all that easy. Let us go over the steps.
-Open the wire guard and remove glass chimney assembly and fuel tank.
-Remove batteries and front knob.
-Remove the 2 screws on bottom of front panel.
-Remove panel by tipping out THE BOTTOM.
-Unscrew 3 body screws and lift off body.
-Remove the screw holding down the igniter. Notice how the igniter is positioned (take a picture).
-Separate the two halves of the "wind cover." The metal is sharp and if your unit is like mine, it will take quite some doing to separate the 2.
-Unscrew 4 wing nuts, lift up the assembly and the gasket.
-Put back the knob.
-Hold down the ignition lever, and using your 2 remaining hands, remove 2 pins.
-What? You don't have 3 hands? Neither did I. AND you're not removing 2 pins. You are twisting, fiddling and bending out two retaining arms over the 2 pins.
-Pull out the metal tube with wick. Remove wick.
-Put new wick in with sewn spot on the "right side" pin. Notice the line on the wick. Put this at the top of the metal tube. OR, be smart and put it a tiny bit higher.
-Press wick to inner sides of tube. At this point you will hear someone yell "OUCH!" Do not worry, it is you.Read more ›
I am impressed with the efficiency of this heater and it seems to be a well - constructed appliance.
The only aspect of this heater that I dislike is the audible chime that sounds when you ignite it. It's not extremely loud (like a smoke detector) but, none the less, could wake up someone in a nearby room if the unit is started while they are sleeping. It only chimes for as long as the wick is held in the "ignite" position, which is very brief.
All in all, a great, fuel efficient little unit. I purchased mine from Ace hardware.Read more ›
