It's very easy to use and not too hard to clean. Because I'm apparently a moron, it took me a little while to understand that pulling the trigger makes the liquid spray out. which is actually really convenient so you're not wasting liquid on areas that don't need it.
I highly recommend! I'm including a photo that shows my in-progress cleaning. You can see how nasty the carpet was (kind of, photo doesn't do it justice) and how it looked after being cleaned. There really was barely a trace of the spots after cleaning them. I took the photo at night with a flash, not the best photo ever but you get the idea...
I tested it out on a spot before going crazy around the rest of the house and was highly impressed, works like a charm. Now, I'm not sure of the life expectancy of these things, but our last one (not of the same brand, two times the price) failed a year or so in without much use, which made me hesitant to get a new steam cleaner in the first place. I'll probably come back to this review in a couple of months to make sure everything's A-OK.
I have yet to tackle the main problem spots in the house, but I did tackle this nasty little spot in front of the door. One swipe and it already made an impact. Finished up the little 3x3 area and dumped out the water to see how bad it was, my goodness I could've had a swamp in my bathtub.
If you want something to use around the house without draining your wallet, I highly suggest this.
This cleaner is not perfect, but it is probably as close as you will get, IF you learn the best ways to use it. When I FIRST purchased it (8 years ago, it successfully got up red kool aid stains (from previous home owner) in the carpet that were lord only knows how old. It took work. a LOT of work, but it DID eventually get it all up. Since then it has removed everything from pet feces and urine (damn pets), various food and drinks (damn kids), and mud and dirt and oil and grime (damn boyfriend). What a messy lot of ungrateful ragamuffins I have .... of course *I* have never spilled anything ;)
How I use it:
HOT water. no not boiling, you ninny.
About twice as much detergent as recommended (you read about the messes above, right?)
I will not hesitate to use bleach (these carpets are already old and shot and at this point, im not concerned about it- test a small area beforehand though if you want to be 'correct'. I just roll with it and say a prayer).
I've also used liquid laundry detergent in a pinch ( little of tht goes a long way so careful there, folks lol)
pretreat really bad areas. You can d this by hand or by running over it SLOWLY to saturate area and then moving to another area while it soaks in.
I go over each line (ummmm another way to say ... I'll go with 'pass over a carpet area') at least twice, sometimes more.
When you suck up the water- GO SLOW. SUPER SLOW. SLOWER. MORE SLOW. thats it, you're at a snails pace. perfect. youll pull up more water and dirt, making it cleaner and dryer.
it takes work and is a slow process. but is HIGHLY effective if you take the time to do it right.
I dont use the attachments, so I cant comment on those.
The only things I would change about the machine is i wish the dirty water receptacle was the same size as clean. it is about 1/3 the size smaller making more trips to the sink.
I also wish it did have an onboard heating element.
Obviously, neither of these things are enough to make me NOT use, buy (twice now!), or like this unit. I truly do love it and cant see myself buying another one without trying first on my filthy carpets LOL. My friend had the same one and when I moved back into my exes house after he passed away suddenly i borrowed hers, as the Bissell I had SUCKED (and not in a good way). but again, thats a whole other issue.
Take the time every so often to CLEAN THE MACHINE. the intake for the dirty water, the brushes, etc. It gets GROSS after awhile. Yes, its a pain in the ass, but it will keep your machine working better, longer.
