Hoover "Z" 700 Bagless Upright vacuum is the world's first Sport Utility Vacuum. The patent pending Z-fold design offers the performance of an upright and the flexibility and stability of a canister. The patent pending Self-Cleaning Hepa filter cleans itself every 6 seconds. Fine dirt and dust are trapped by the filter as it rotates while the larger particles fall into the dirt cup. As it reaches the cleaning position, a combination of reverse flow and gentle tapping releases the fine dirt and dust from the filter. Dirt and dust fall into the dirt cup. The filter continues to turn and the next section is cleaned. The DigiTouch Control Pad allows for the ease of simply touching the desired setting and having it automatically adjust the On/Off switch, Automatic Carpet Height Settings, Automatic Hard Surface Settings, Gentle brush settings, and diagnostic indicators. The Telescoping Quick Release Wand with Super Stretch Hose gives you 20 feet of cleaning reach for easy stair cleaning, and the hose swivels 360 degrees so it won't kink or topple the vacuum. In addition, the Z comes with a Pet Hair Cleaning Tool, Lifetime LED Headlights, Extra 16" Cleaning Wand and a 14" Floor Brush as well as a 35 foot power cord. The Z 700 also has a 2 Year Warranty and is virtually Maintenance Free. No belts, bulbs, bags, or filters to replace...ever.

1) Oversized rear wheels make it easy to do throw rugs, transition from floor to carpet, and just move the machine around. No more bunching up a rug because little wheels couldn't clear the bump.
2) Permanent self, cleaning HEPA filter. Other vacuums expect you to spend $30 to $40 every six months for new filters. Warning: If you have a long haired dog this isn't the vacuum for you. The long hairs can cause problems with the filter (stops it from spinning and that's how it cleans itself -- info from a Hoover service tech). But for the rest of us, it's a great vac (in 5 years of using our first Z700 we didn't have any filter problems with 2 adults and 3 cats, including one long hair, in a big house with lots of carpets).
3) No light bulbs to replace! Six bright, long life LEDs are spaced across the front of the vac.
4) Very long hose makes doing stairs easy and it very well integrated into the vacuum, so you don't have to find a place to store a separate hose.
5) Long low nose fits under furniture very easily.
6) Adjustable for every user. Most vacuums seem to be designed for 5'6" ladies and using them has always resulted in a back ache for this 6' tall fellow. The Z700 allows you to adjust its handle's height so the vacuum fits you! No more back aches from stooping over to vacuum.
One caveat: When the Chinese bought Hoover (BAD!), they ended support for this brilliant vacuum. So you won't be able to get parts. Since it is a $499 vacuum (worth every penny of it), we made a point to buy two so we'll have our own spare parts!
I had seen a TV commercial for the Z over a year ago, and was surprised to see this $500 vacuum on sale at Home Depot for $99. I bought one, got home, unpacked it, used it, and went back to Home Depot to buy the last 2 remaining units. Each one should last a decade or more, so I should be set for life, without the need to buy another vacuum ever again! Having the best of any given product and the knowledge that you will be able to enjoy and benefit from it for the rest of your life is extremely gratifying and thrilling!
It took me a few times using the Z to understand that it is extremely sturdy, does not need to be babied and should be pulled when in canister mode from as close to the base of the hose as comfortably possible (about a foot, which stretches out to three feet and keeps the unit close to the user when walking around). If handled correctly, the weight becomes irrelevant and you can maneuver it very well and somewhat precisely. Once I mastered this, and stopped banging the thing into my walls and doorjambs, I really began to get into the usability and versatility of this exceptional product.
First of all, the mechanics; the motor itself is powerful and the suction is consistent and impressive. If you take off the final filter, you can see the high quality copper wiring within the motor and know that it was built with materials that will last. The sound of the motor has a very bearable pitch and volume and is non-irritating unlike so many other cleaning machines. The self- cleaning HEPA filter is revolutionary and should have won some type of appliance award. I'm not sure if there is such a thing, but there should be! The tools are high quality, meaning the construction and brush density, especially the hard floor brush, which, after using, I clean with the crevice tool before storing.
The best way to use the Z for dusting furniture and appliances is to attach the tools directly to the end of the hose and not to the wand. This way there is more maneuverability and accuracy because it becomes an extension of your hand. The hose stretch ability is awesome, a great benefit for upper shelves on bookshelves, dressers, or any furniture that is at or above shoulder height. The hose stretches longer than anyone's arm to arm distance and creates a more free flowing experience while using the vacuum all over the house. Lastly, the hose material is perfect, neither too tacky nor too stiff. The hose is an integral part of a vacuum and in this case Hoover included a wonderfully elastic and bendable hose that stretches and compresses itself depending on the required stretch needed at any given time while cleaning.
The generous 35 foot cord length is another asset that enables the user to go from room to room freely and is the key to convenience...no more bent plugs, if you're careful! The cord weight and sheath are clearly another premium quality part that was included while developing the Z. What a pleasure to continue using the product and not have the down time of plugging and unplugging the unit! This feature is somewhat troublesome wrapping up and storing on the vacuum's covered tool storage compartment, but, after a few uses, becomes routine and just a final moment preparing to store this masterpiece until it's next use.
Like Ford Motor's Edsel, this vacuum was not welcomed by the average consumer. Back in the olden days; a demonstration salesman would instruct and educate the customer on how to properly use and benefit from the features and capabilities of a previously unfamiliar machine. This personal touch would have been all that was necessary to make the Z a user friendly vacuum and get the customer off and running home...to start their cleaning frenzy!
I go around the house first using all the attachments; dusting and cleaning furniture, and then switch to the extended wand and hard floor brush going around the house a second time. Keeping the motor running for over an hour in the process doesn't bother it a bit. No overheating, no shutting down, just constant reliability.
What a shame that such a well made, unique and functional vacuum wasn't successful and well-received by the public. It must have cost Hoover dearly, seeing as the company has just been sold to a competitor. I fear that what they brought to the table with ingenuity coupled with manufacturing capability will fade away.
Have had this a little over a year now. Repair Problems! Contacting Hoover, now owned by Dirt Devil is an excercise in patience. They showed no knowledge of this discontinued model. I need a small rubber part which they could not locate. I will have to take it to a repair shop. I would rate this product at about two stars no because of the problems that I have experienced since my first review. Current pricing is far below the $500.00 when first available.
