- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2016Style: Fighting StickVerified Purchase5 Stars for the price! 4 Stars if it was more expensive!
This little thing is proof that it's the PLAYER behind the controller that matters, not the size or price of the fightstick being used.
I purchased this because it was an inexpensive and available option for SFV. And I wasn't expecting a whole lot but HORI is a good brand and I thought it would hold me over while I waited for MadCatz to actually ship out theirs. (I remember the XboxOne KI TE2 stick launch delays.... I remember pre-ordering day 1 and still getting it a month late... I remember...) SO, this was basically a cheap appetizer/stand-in. But at this point, having played on it for a week, I don't even know that I need the more expensive stick... (that still hasn't arrived I might add. Over a week after release and I pre-ordered)
Sure, if you say, "Pick one for free" and you can have this or a MadCatz TE2, take the latter. Those are great sticks! But this is 1/5 the price. And this thing really works. And works well, although it won't be for everyone.
YES, it IS small, so:
-If you're sporadic or really intense with your inputs, probably not for you. But for me, it doesn't budge while it's sitting on the coffee table thanks to the non-slip pads on the bottom. If you normally place fightsticks on your lap, maybe not.
-If you have huge hands or are clumsy, probably not for you. But the small buttons don't bother me at all considering that I play overhand (or "claw" position) on standard controllers and fightpads when playing fighting games. So while these are smaller than standard arcade buttons, they're still bigger than pad buttons.
I personally don't have input errors with it, it's very responsive, it works perfectly with PS3 & PS4, I've never thought "I would have won that... if I had a more expensive fightstick!!". If you're good, you're good. And if you're terrible, you're terrible. No amount of expensive parts or flashy details is going to change that. So really it just comes down to whether it FITS and feels comfortable to YOU. This thing costs $40 and WORKS. Definitely worth it if the size isn't an issue but money is. At $40, it's worth it just to check out.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2016Style: Fighting StickVerified PurchaseI bought this as a cheap present for my roommate. My absolute first impression was that this thing is TINY. Buttons are about 3/4" wide, the stick/balltop are about 90% the size of a standard stick, and it is VERY light. When using it I feel like I'm constantly holding it down at the same time. It does have some non-textured rubber feet for coffee table/desk use, but the stick does still move around a bit. The buttons are also very resistive -- I use the Qanba Q1 normally Qanba Q1 PS3 & PC Joystick (Fightstick) and I can definitely feel the difference when I go back and forth. Some old timer button abuse definitely feels required haha. The resistance makes "double tapping" not feel viable on these buttons, partially because they're about the size of a nickle.
The stick has more than a few things going for it. For starters, it's just about the cheapest way to get a stick right now. If you're new to the fighting game scene, you probably got a bit of sticker shock at the cost of some of the full-sized current gen sticks out there. MSRP for the Mini sits at $39.99 as of writing. That's less than a quarter of the price of other sticks, and still under the cost of an official Dualshock 4, the Hori Fightpad, and the MadCatz Fightpad. The build quality is also top notch -- it's small and light without feeling super cheap. There are also a full 8 face buttons, for those who use custom configurations or who plan to use this with a variety of games. PC compatibility is plug-and-play. It uses the DirectInput interface, which means that you'll have to use some kind of software mapper if you want to use this with X-Input only games (As of this writing, Street Fighter V for the PC only supports X-Input, though Capcom has stated that they plan on including DirectInput support at a later date.)
So, who is this for? Someone who wants a cheap backup stick hanging around, something that cost-conscious parents won't have to worry about their younger children abusing, and ditto for the person who doesn't want his friends mashing on their $300 VLX.
If this is your first stick, I would recommend taking a look at the MadCatz Alpha before you buy. It has a 6-Button configuration, but otherwise similar feature set. It does however use standard Sanwa pushbuttons -- the same used in larger (and much more expensive) sticks. I haven't seen or used on in person, but it's is about $30 more than the Mini and to be honest I probably would have gone the other way if I had the chance to buy another. With that said the Mini's build quality does feel solid and at the very least it'll tide you over until (ideally) you can afford a larger stick with better buttons and more weight. It also can't be stressed enough that this is a value stick, with lots of features for the price point.
PROS:
-Cheap! Maybe the cheapest PS4 stick available on the market right now.
-Small and portable.
-8 button configuration
-PC/PS3/PS4 compatible, with functioning home/share/options buttons.
CONS:
-Smaller than I thought.
-Very tight button configuration.
-Buttons/Stick are very resistive and clicky.
-Very light!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2016Style: Fighting StickVerified PurchaseI never enjoyed the fighting games as much as I used to because of the PS3/Xbox 360 controllers. The triggers always made it feel clunky. I never wanted to plunk down $200 for a controller so I stayed away from the fight sticks. I then saw the HORI Fighting Stick Mini 4, and for $40, I was on the fence for a while. I finally took the plunge after watching so-so reviews, but I saw a review on YouTube from Ronin24, and they said that for $40, it's a heck of a stick. Not as good as the pro sticks, but still a darn good stick. I received it today, played a little Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and it's pretty darn cool. The main problem I had with UMvC3 with a pad is that pulling off supers is a crapshoot because I pushed square and triangle at the same time with my thumb, and I have smallish hands, so sometimes I'd pull it off, sometimes I'd fail miserably. Now with this fight stick, I was pulling off supers with ease. The build quality is okay. You can tell right off the bat that this is a budget stick. The buttons aren't too snappy, the joystick itself is rather loose, but it's still responsive. I've seen reviews that say that this stick isn't for true fighting game aficionados, but that's like saying that as soon as you pick a Gibson Les Paul, you'll be a guitar god in no time. You can learn how to play on a cheap little guitar. You don't need an expensive stick to enjoy fighting games. I'm sure that sooner or later, I'll finally be able to pick up a pro fighting stick, but in the mean time, this'll do.

Andrew A.Reviewed in Canada on December 8, 20215.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic stick for the price point. But beware a few things!
Style: Fighting StickVerified PurchaseHonestly. As an introductory stick for fighting games that typically use arcade like controls (Street Fighter, Blazblue, Tekken, Virtua Fighter and so on) this is a fantastic buy.
However. There are a few things you should be aware of BEFORE buying.
1. When they say MINI. It is REALLY small. The buttons are smaller than a standard arcade stick as well. So for smaller hands this may be a far more suitable purchase (unlike mine which are larger than "normal" hands).
2. The parts COULD be better for the price point. But again. As a beginners stick I would recommend it. As a veteran I would not recommend it though. Buy a Hori RAP4 Kai if this is not your first stick (or as a suitable replacement until you can afford the big boys)
3. Your hands can get kind of cramped around the stick area, The button interface is wonderful however. I currently own a modded Hori RAP4 Kai and this one so if you have big hands. Get big and better (and modifiable) stick.
4. If you're in the market to mod a lower end (this would be an entry model) stick. This is NOT the one for you. Trust me. This thing is very finicky with how all the buttons connect to the PCB. I believe (DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS) that you *could* put an 8 way gate in here. But I am unsure if the gate on the mini stick HAS potential to have that mod done. However when you open it up it appears as though this may be possible
5. Lastly, this product does work on PC, PS4, and PS3. If you have a small desk this stick is perfect. BUT. The pads on the bottom of the arcade stick DO NOT really grip most surfaces. So I would strongly recommend a mousepad, mat, or something that has a grippy surface if you are rather... violent I guess?
Main thing is here it moves A LOT.
TLDR:
Great stick for money. Small as all get out. Hard to mod. Moves around a lot. Parts could be better for money spent. Great for beginners. Not for veterans. 8/10
