HP wasn't my favorite vendor until now. I have had systems from DELL in the past and generallyliked DELL for robust long usage. I have used Lenovo laptops at work. Lenovos were generally bricky and ugly and had reliability issues as well. I had also used HP laptops at work earlier but they were large heavy bricks that made lots of noise with the fan and weren't overly reliable with long life. But with this product, HP has hit a home run!
I was eyeing an ASUS system for over a year. Even though that one was priced lower (about $340), it had lower DRAM (4GB), had an HDD (instead of the super fast SSD in this) and in general so so ASUS quality.
For a workhorse laptop or a simple plain lap-desk configuration this can't be beat anywhere at this price point in terms of looks, specs and chops. Way to go HP!
For anyone looking for a light (<4.5lbs), fast and sleek laptop, I highly recommend it especially for the budget conscious. Why pay more when you get more for less?
Before buying this laptop, I did a lot of research to get a worthy computer, so I almost got the HP Envy 15 on their website for less than 5 hundred but after seeing so many reviews there, I decided to give it a try and get this one.
If you are a regular user and want it to send emails, surf the web, use Photoshop and things like that, you should consider getting this computer, now, if you are and advanced user expecting to play heavy games, I don't believe its the best for you.
With I5 processor, you can do a lot of things, multitask and you will see no lag on it, considering I bought the 128 Gb SSD, so about graphics, nothing to complain about.
The weight? I saw some people saying that its a little heavy, and before buying this laptop, I really believed it, even because seeing the pictures, you think it really is, but after having it in hands, man, its nothing heavy, very light, and the design is much nicer than in the pictures, IN MY OPINION!!
So, very good display, beautiful design (*Looks much better than in the picture, believe me), nice keyboard with no cons, great webcam when you are in a light place, 3.5 stars touchpad, nice sound with DTS software so you can edit the sound quality and don't forget that the sound comes by the left and right sides of the laptop, not from the bottom!
Now, the only CONS until now: The Touchpad! Really, I just think they should make a better responsive one because sometimes you need to press two times so that it can work and its not as sensitive as I expected it to be, that's why I'm already considering in buying a mice soon.
Final Consideration: Despite this Touchpad, it is worthy every penny spent and if you are looking for a good computer for a good price and great performance for daily tasks, Photoshop, play some games and multitask, Get It... Have a good day!!
I'll start with the pros: With a mobile Core i5 CPU (the 6200u) combined with 8gb of upgradeable DDR4 RAMM (verified with CPU-Z) this PC is amazingly fast in the benchmarks for under $500. There are better and new versions of the CPU, true, but I have yet to personally push the CPU to its max, and I use plenty of Adobe and AutoCAD software. When you add the 128gb SSD to the mix, boot times are nonexistent. I can literally switch this laptop on, type in my password, and be searching the web or opening heavy applications in under 10 seconds. Also, the HD display resolution is 1920x1080 and at only 15.6" it looks amazing, even compared to my desktop with an NVidia graphics card which runs 1650x1080 at 22".
For the cons: Windows 10. There aren't any cons I've personally run into hardware wise. Other reviewers have mentioned some issues though that I will touch on. The touchpad is probably my only similar gripe, and it's a very small one. It's simply not the most sensitive touchpad I've used, and takes a harder touch to left click than I would like, so I just use the physical buttons. There are plenty of ways to adjust the sensitivity though, as a lot of users have found, so it's definitely no deal breaker. Anyone who uses a laptop for more than a few hours a day will no doubt be investing in a cordless mouse to go with. Another issue that I see a lot is fan problems. HP has been known over the years for not updating their fan technology and having a high failure rate due to heat and fan problems. This is becoming less and less of an issue for HP thankfully, but only time will tell if the parts actually hold up. The fan itself is actually incredibly quiet. This is also a non-touch screen, but I hardly view that as a con, I specifically looked very hard for a non-touch laptop for my needs.
Unfortunately, Windows 10, no matter which company you buy though, is LOADED with bloatware. The entire start menu has become a giant advertisement. It took my a good 2 hours to set up this laptop, and by set up, I mean deleting half of the installed programs and worthless "apps" that come pre-installed. For some, these may be a convenience, but to me, and avid lover of Windows 7, they just get in the way. Also not a fan of how often Windows Update has to run, due to how new Windows 10 is. However, I've installed Classic Shell for a standard Windows 7 style start menu, cleaned up all the unnecessary bloatware and now I have a regular laptop.
HOWEVER, THERE WAS A MAJOR DEAL BREAKER. I am currently writing this review ~90 days or so after first receiving and using this laptop, and since then, the wireless card/wireless software (still troubleshooting, unsure which is the real culprit) has stopped working. The computer still immediately sees all available networks, and tries to connect as usual, but now, only a few months after the purchase, this laptop is reporting "connected, but no internet" for every single connection I try, even as I sit next to my desktop with a wired connection that is browsing the web just fine. I have tested this with every different connection I could find, at school, home and friends homes, all to no avail. If I didn't have a backup, (PDAnet, an $8 app that lets one use their smartphone as a 4G or wifi signal connection, VERY well worth the money) my brand new, $500 computer would be basically useless.
So, 1 star. It was a pain to set up correctly, even though everything went perfectly. The laptop usually performed well, but does feel a bit cheaply constructed, as made obvious by the mediocre touchpad and POS wireless network adapter. Here is the main thing though: No computer, no matter whether a person spends $500 or $5000, should have these major hardware issues within it's first few months, and I am speaking as well about several reviews I noticed which mentioned a faulty cooling system as well. This laptop was obviously not made to last, and I will be avoiding HP products in the future. I guess this laptop was such a steal for good reason.
