This installation was done on a late 2009 iMac running High Sierra. Basically, you just plug in the printer and turn it on. Remove the tape on the paper tray and a small piece of protective cardboard from inside the printer. Then go to HP's install site at 123.hp.com. (You can also do part of this directly from the printer if you want, but I think it's easier on the computer).
The install program will prompt you on how to properly install the ink and paper. There are helpful videos. The only thing that tripped me up was when it came time to generate a test print for the scanner. The install prompt said to click "ok" on the printer's tiny touch screen. But all I could see on the screen were prompts for my country and language. But, even though you will have already answered those on the website, answer them again on your printer's touch screen, and then you'll get to the "ok" prompt.
Once you're done, you still will have to tell your iMac - and I assume PC - that you have a new printer. That was easy. The iMac saw it and I just made it the new default printer.
On my iPhone I downloaded the HP Smart app from the Apple App Store. It was easy to print photos from my library. I did get a little confused when I was setting up to print email. It said it would send me a pin to complete the process and never did. Yet, when I checked my iPhone it saw the printer and printed out an email. Go figure. Maybe these instructions were for an older model.
Two other things: You will come to one of those privacy agreements at the end of the set up. Make sure you read them. I opted out of letting them monitor my printer or sending me updates. Also, I did not sign up for HP's instant ink program. It didn't look like it would save me that much money, given both the privacy and flexibility I'd be giving up. The cheapest plan is $3 a month -- $36 a year -- and allows you 100 pages a month. My printing needs are light, but there are times I might go over 100 a month. And replacement cartridges are $27 on Amazon. It just didn't make budget sense and it's allowing a backdoor into some of your most private documents. HP might not care, but a hacker might.
Hope this helps!
The 5055 is a wireless printer and I had difficulty getting my laptop to print on it. While troubleshooting I made online contact with the HP Help Desk and soon was on the phone with someone I assumed was an HP Help Desk Representative. He asked to take control of my laptop remotely and I let him do so. In a matter of a few minutes he had the laptop printing through the wireless without issue. Great.. end of problem...or so I thought.
I had no need to print for about a week and then when I tried I soon found the same problem. Laptop would not talk to the printer so seeing as I had success with the HP Help Desk I used them again.
Here is what transpired . At 4:00pm they said they were switching me to someone else with more expertise. It turns out that I was now on the phone to Solution Mart LLC, a supposed dedicated HP Printer Support group. But they are actually SCAMMERS.
From 4:00pm to 6:00pm they were on my laptop, and the verdict was that I had “corrupted files” and they had to download the drivers, which I watched them do at least three times. And then he tells me I need new software to stop this from happening again and will cost me to have it installed and completed. The “PC Max Privacy Shield” was going to cost me $199.99 for two years.
At that point I have to admit I was confused and a little overwhelmed but he did get the printer to print so I fell for the deal. After another half hour of install they were done and they had my credit card and driver license.
As soon as I was off the phone I rebooted my laptop and the problem was back. I called back and bitched at them and soon had been transferred to 5 different techs. Each of them with a less understandable accent. They went to work again and so did I.
I read the online reviews of Solutions Mart and they weren't good. Many had written about the same issues I was having and called them out as scammers. After a Google Earth search of their address showed a residential home in Long Island I was convinced I was duped.
At 9:00pm...five full hours after I started working with these bozos he says it was my McAfee Firewall that was stopping the laptop from printing. But he couldn't find a way to turn that off. Of course he can't because he's not selling it.
So here is what I believed happened.
** When I first got the HP Help desk to successfully get it working I was actually talking to Solutions Mart.
** I think they disabled the McAfee while they were supposedly fixing the printer issue. ( I later found out how easy it is to do.) Knowing that the next time I needed to print I would have an issue and they would be there to “help”.
** After 5 hours of nonsense and double talk I got them off the laptop, canceled that credit card and knew there was never any real issue. It is easy to go into McAfee to allow the laptop to see the printer.
The bottom line here is Solutions Mart LLC are scammers and HP has to be responsible for their actions. Think twice about any online “help” for any HP product.

I did the setup manually, it was fast and easy. Wifi, document printing, photo printing, eprint, copy/scan are all working seamlessly. I set up the printer to order ink by itself whenever the ink is low so that I will never run out of ink. The printer is very slick and portable, it even prints double side automatically to save papers. I print from my iPhone, iPad and MacBook seamlessly too, I use it for home/business . I love everything about this printer. I highly recommend.
