Please help us improve this feature. Tell us what you think of this feature.
The Deskjet 6940 isn't your average inkjet printer. This printer offers the ability to print documents and photos at up to 4800 optimized dpi resolution for exceptionally crystal-clear prints and at paper sizes of up to 8.5 x 24 inches. HP's Vivera Inks and optional six-ink color technology allows for professional quality photos with true-to-life color.
The automatic duplex printing feature allows for printing on both sides of the paper which greatly reduces paper costs. This printer even allows for printing photos directly from a PictBridge compatible digital camera via the integrated PictBridge USB input, bypassing the need to use a computer for printing photos.
Speed is one of the 6940's greatest assets. This Deskjet is capable of printing up to 36 ppm in black and 27 ppm in color which is significantly quicker than other similar inkjet printers.
Wireless Print Sharing and Networking Features
HP has equipped the Deskjet 6940 with plenty of useful wireless and networking features to help expand upon its usability. The built-in Ethernet input eliminates the need for additional hardware or software, and it also allows for easy setup of a home or office network that allows the user to connect multiple laptops and desktop computers to one printer.
Wireless is the wave of the future, and this printer features the latest in wireless technology. Just plug the printer networking cable into a wireless router (sold separately) and enjoy wireless printing. The Deskjet 6940 also supports Blue tooth wireless connectivity which allows for wireless printing straight from a camera phone or PDA device with an optional wireless print adapter (not included).
Award-Winning Support and Reliability
HP has been a reliable and dependable name since 1988 and was even chosen by consumers as the "most reliable" printer in a 2006 study.
The Deskjet 6940 is compatible with both Windows (including Vista) and Macintosh. It measures 17.7 x 14.5 x 5.7 inches and weighs 13.2 pounds. It's backed by a 1-year limited warranty which includes HP's Total Care advice and support.

I have never had a paper jam.
Contrary to a previous reviewer, there ARE large print cartridges available that last very well.
The printer is fast and prints very nicely at the fast (low ink usage) settings.
I like the paper tray as it holds allot of paper, is easy to use, and is covered.
It is a good, fast and simple unit but I do wish it did two-sided printing.
It looks good and works quietly and reliably.
Edit 2010: This printer lasted 3 years of light use (mostly black only prints) and then the color cartridge stopped working. Cleaning and new cartridges did not solve the problem. The printer would not work at all with a color cartridge in the machine but continued to work as a black only printer if the cartridge was removed. Still, 3 years is about the most I've ever gotten out of a inkjet printer. I prefer toner machines now as they seem to last longer.
I gave this printer a 5 out of 5 because of its quality, ease of use, print quality, appearance itself as it looks great with an all black desktop and overall satisfaction with it.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a good bang for the buck factor as well as an amazing product, once again, from Hewlett-Packard.
HP provides pictures of this problem. Look for "Cannot Insert Print Cartridge" and you'll see the image of the spring out of place. What it doesn't show is an image of the damaged circuit.
This is an excellent inkjet printer...the mea culpa aspects aside...I've just ordered another HP 6940 Inkjet Printer from Amazon. I recommend this printer to any one...but be careful.
needs. The color is excellent and the ink cartridges which came
with the printer are lasting a long time considering the amount
of printing that I have been doing. Putting in the two ink
cartridges is very easy. I wanted a printer that did not have
the five or six cartridge set-up.
Cons: Small paper tray, drinks up ink like water, ink cartridges way too small and expensive
After my beloved HP 990c died, which printed absolutely beautiful graphics and photographs, I searched long and hard for a replacement printer. I do a lot of desktop publishing, and the graphics quality is just, if not more, important to me than photo quality. On the recommendation of a salesman (stupid!), I purchased an Epson. Never again! What a piece of junk! I also tried an HP PhotoSmart printer, which printed great photos but just so-so graphics. Then I purchased the HP 6940 and have been very happy with it. It gave me the excellent graphics quality of my old 990c. For you photo buffs, sometimes I print 8x10 black and white portrait photos, and for years I have been frustrated trying to get "darkroom quality" on my inkjets. I tried using PhotoShop and PhotoShop Elements to tweak it here and there, with unsatisfactory results. It was the same with the 6940 until I printed them using the HP PhotoSmart Premier software that came with the printer. What a difference! I didn't have to change any settings or anything -- it just printed the B&W's much better!
Now for the bad news: when I have a particular job to do, the end result is usually printed elsewhere on a professional machine. However, I do lots of draft printing to check different page designs, etc. before I consider the job final. On a 5-page, double-side printed playbill, I went through at least SIX cartridges of ink!! I'd be part way through a job, and the printer tells me I'm low on ink already! Purchasing the 3-combo pack at Costco cost me about $72 x 2 = $144!!Read more ›
