The second and third machine on the other hand were very dirty. It looked like a mechanic has just changed the oil on a car and then opened the laptop and typed an eight page term paper, repetitively pointed at the screen trying to convince a co-worker that the LCD screen was in fact a Touch Screen (it's not a touch screen) and then closed the lid after smearing butter across the bottom of the case. I would advise this refurbisher to perform a quick cosmetic cleaning to the outside of the laptop and screen with 97% isopropyl alcohol. After cleaning the laptop the Windows OS Install proceeded. The internal CPU Fan was very loud and upon loading the OS a few hardware tools were used to check components and system temperatures. The Core i5 3437Us on both machines were idling at between 195 and 204 F. The Intel Core i5-3437U max temp is 221 F. I removed the bottom cover of the laptop (I needed to upgrade the RAM from 8GB to 16GB by adding another 8GB DDR3 Stick) and to my surprise the cooling fan was caked full of dust. After cleaning the dust with compressed air the system ran at a comfortable 164 F which is still warm but not dangerously hot for this chip. Again These are all simple things I believe the refurbisher can resolve in house by just provided a more thorough quality check. I would also suggest performing BIOS updates to these models as HP released an update in February of 2018 which resolves security vulnerabilities with Specter and Meltdown. I may decide to remove the heatsink and cooling fan and apply new thermal paste as Intel has been known to use sub par thermal paste on their CPUs. But time will tell. I doubt I'll perform this unless the client complains about noise or surface temperature heat. I don't want to void the refurbishers product warranty by performing this task even though we are an authorized shop and are A+ Certified.
I will state that these items are annoyances I will continue to order devices from here as they equipment is solid and fairly priced.
Expect refurbs from this seller to be VERY road-tested. I received two separate units (the first required total replacement to even boot). The first had holes worn through the screen, damage to bezel, wear to keyboard, stripped screws, missing feet, and discoloration. Also, expect failed any memory to be replaced with non-matching, repurposed chips (e.g. mine was one Dell RAM card, and one from HP), which certainly isn't best practices for refurbishment.
The second unit I received was in better condition (though the body of the device, especially on the bottom, was very beat up). However, the battery life is atrocious (~1.5 hours on full charge, while independent consumer tests indicate 5-7 hours on economy settings)--and the battery clearly has significant wear and use physically, as well. I will be ordering a 3rd party replacement--largely because the RMA (while free and easy) was very time consuming.
I dealt with phone service at several points in the RMA process, very professional and friendly. But in the end, that matters less than delivering a working refurbished device without significant damage.
All in all, the product I have finally ended up with (after I replace the battery) is WELL WORTH the price the seller is offering the machine at. But in the end, don't order this if you expect it to work out of the box, or need the machine up and running within a week or two of initial receipt.
