I'm going to miss this laptop, and if I ever need a gaming laptop again, I'm going to hope to find its successor. Thanks, HP, for a great build and a really solid laptop. There's not much I'd change about the HP Omen if I could.
-The screen is fantastic. Colors are bright, and viewing angles are on par for an IPS screen. It does have a gloss finish, so glare can be an issue outside or near bright light sources, but indoors I have yet to have an issue. While the 1920X1080 resolution is lower than other performance laptops these days, I find the resolution to be more than adequate for a screen this size, and a good compromise for the GPU's performance.
-The keyboard is clicky and responsive. Several people have complained about the fact that the keys are offset, and at first that was annoying for me as well, but after a few days I've gotten used to it and have no more typos than I do on my desktop's mechanical unit.
-GPU. Not the most powerful chip by any means, but the 860M is perfectly capable of running almost any modern games at decent settings at the default 1920X1080 resolution. I've played The Talos Principle and ALien:Isolation extensively, and average between 45 to 60 fps on medium settings. Newer games will likely require detail settings turned to low.
-General System: The touch pad works decently well. Again, not the best, but it is responsive and has Mac-like control features. The touchscreen is actually very accurate and responsive, but I don't use it too much. System boots extremely quickly, I average about 4-6 seconds from power on to desktop.
-Ports. Having all the ports on the back is surprisingly handy. 4 USB 3.0 ports is almost overkill.
-Difficult to access internal components. You need to peel easily deformed rubber pieces from the bottom to access the screws holding the back on. Only the SSD is replaceable, everything else is soldered in. I replaced the stock 256GB SanDisk A110 with a 512GB 850 Evo. The system will accept any B and M keyed M.2 drive, and mounting screws are available for lengths of both 60 and 80mm.
-Battery life. While it is understandable that battery life while gaming will be poor, even low intensity tasks such as web browsing quickly drain the battery on this unit. You're lucky to get more than 5 hours of low-intensity work done. Not a deal breaker, but does lead to:
-The Power BRICK. Literally a brick. I'm honestly surprised TSA has allowed me to board airplanes with this beast! Not only is it overly large and heavy, but it buzzes faintly when not under load. Just barely audible at least.
-Finish. The matte black finish looks sharp, but greedily slurps up and proudly displays grease and fingerprints.
-SD Card slot. A minor gripe, but it is a pain to get an SD card into the slot. You have to kind of awkwardly tilt the machine to the side to get an angle on it, as it is recessed under the right hand speakers.
-BIOS. The BIOS is pretty limited, and seems to have some kinks to work out. I had to flash shortly after purchase due to the screen flicker issue others have mentioned, which was a piece of cake.
Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this purchase. HP has designed a stunning looking and adequately performing laptop at what I consider to be a very reasonable price. Hopefully for the next generation they redesign the power brick to be less cumbersome and put an easy access door on the bottom to allow the HDD to be changed more readily, but these are minor quibbles. If you travel frequently, enjoy playing moderately graphically intense games, and value a good screen and a responsive system, this is a sure bet.
This is a relatively minor issue, I am still debating whether or not to return it for a different omen that hopefully doesnt have the same problem.
The other issue was at first my speakers sounded like they were blown out when I was listening to music, but that only happened one night and hasn't happened again since.
Other than these two issues, the laptop is very nice. It looks amazing, runs extremely fast, it boots up in literally seconds. It can handle most any game as well.
If not for the mouse thing I would get it a 5 out of 5. I am still very happy with the purchase. Perfect combination of looking professional while being able to play games.
