The problem is my battery falls out of the netbook from time to time. The battery locks in place by sliding a little tab into lock position - easy. But for some reason, my tab slides to unlock by itself. (I keep it in my briefcase. Maybe it unlocks while it's in there.) When this happens, the battery will fall right out of the netbook when picked up. It happened to me while downloading a huge file last week. Imagine the frustration. Now, after I lock the battery into place, I secure the tab with duct tape. That fixed it. If not for this issue, I would have given this netbook 5 stars
First of all, the thing that bothers me the most is the keyboard. I found it not ergonomic at all. Coming from a MacBook where the keys are spaced out decently and easy to locate the key, the keys on this HP is WAY too close to each other. I usually type really fast and rarely look at the keyboard to type with my MacBook, I would have to look at the keyboard to type. I would assume that the keys were spaced together so closely because it is indeed a small netbook which is designed to be smaller, but I've seen netbooks that were more ergonomic by making the keys slightly smaller and not close together. But all I can say overall is that it would take some getting used to This is my only complaint from this laptop and I don't expect more from a decently priced netbook like this.
Battery life is quite decent, I would estimate about two hours of life thanks to having less moving parts but I'd say the battery cells does not have the same amount as a regular laptop would. The CPU is a bit very slow (1.6GHz) and not meant for powerhouse usage like video editing and such. The hard drive is adequate, but will not hold so much (16GB SSD). The boot time in my opinion is the average of most Windows OS boot times. The Wi-Fi is not up to date (802.11g) but for web browsing it is a pretty decent speed. The operating system is Windows XP, but in my opinion this OS is much better than Windows Vista which would definitely decrease the performance.
I'd say that this laptop is perfect for those who is always on the move such as college students or people always on the road with a wifi hotspot. I would also say this would be perfect for kids who are old enough to play with computers [responsibly] and get to know how they work. For the price, size and weight of this netbook, this can be taken anywhere you want to. Again its not meant for powerhouse usage but for just taking notes, YouTube, web surfing and chat etc. The webcam is quite cheap but still usable on programs like Skype.
Overall, I am quite satisfied at this netbook for the portability and competitive pricing. My only problems is how I have to change how I type on the keyboard, but you can be used to typing on this after some time.
Then I found that HP had developed their own version of Linux called Mi. So I decided to ditch XP and install HP's Linux.
The difference between Linux and Windows XP is like night and day. Linux is quicker to boot, quicker to run and load apps and surfing the net is as fast as it is on my main desktop PC.
If you have a netbook, especially one from HP, you owe it to yourself to switch over to Linux. It comes pre-loaded with Firefox, Open Office, games and a whole bunch of other useful applications. It's not hard, this was the first time I used Linux.
You can find HP's netbook Linux here at their site.
Command Line Interface:
Some people have complained that the Command Line Interface (CLI) is missing in this version. It isn't. To enable it, go to Settings, click on the Advanced Tab, then select "Customize Settings" and then finally, scroll down to where you see Root Terminal. Put a check mark in the box and voila, the Root Terminal program icon will now show in the Advanced Tab.
