Many people originally saw the netbook as a travel PC, a supplement to a desktop or even a cheaper alternative to the iPad. Allow me to suggest that this machine is really (in my opinion) better than that. I've decided that this machine will be my main PC and replace my HUGE laptop. Yes, you need to purchase an external CD drive and yes you will need to get accustomed to typing on a smaller keyboard and yes you will need to adjust to a smaller screen but there is very little that this machine cannot do so why not? There's 3x's the hard drive space on this machine than there is on my regular laptop. Why do you really need to have a cd drive? I have a portable one and I take it with me if I need to use it but I can live without it for day to day purposes. Anyway, it's just my opinion but there's no reason to have any other kind of PC. :)
UPDATE 10.6.12: The computer was telling me often that it was using a lot of memory so I did update it from the 1 to the 2. It was about $15 on eBay and it has really made the pc really speedy. I found it by searching "extra memory for the hp mini 210-4150NR" and it came up right away. I suggest doing the upgrade in memory, it's well worth it.
The 10 inch screen is approximately the same size as the Ipad. It is enough space to browse the Internet, check email, and type Word documents. I would not want to have this as my primary computer, but for occasional travel or coffee shop use, it is great. I always have the wireless, USB mouse that I keep in the bag with this Netbook for easier use.
At first I thought that the lack of a CD/DVD drive would be a problem, but with the memory card slot and the USB connections, I haven't missed the CD/DVD drive (and you could always add an external if you really needed one). The only downside is that you cannot use this Netbook to watch movies that are on DVDs, so keep that in mind if you were planning on using this in the car to watch movies.
The battery life for this device is excellent! I usually get very close to 8-10 hours, and that is with a good bit of WiFi use (You can get even more time with the WiFi off and the screen dim). I also love that it has a feature which makes it very quick to turn the computer on while it is hibernating.
The keyboard feels good to press, and is touted as spill-resistant, although I have not tested that out.
All in all, this is a good Netbook for occasional use; I would not recommend this as a primary computer, but for travel or other use away from home, it is great!
Also, if you do get this Netbook, I recommend this case: Targus Sport Clamshell Case Designed for 10.2 Inch Netbooks TNC101US (Black)
I thought I would miss on my trip that it didn't have a DVD drive due to the size of the computer, but I didn't end up missing it all since the streaming availability options were so numerous.
I'm also looking forward to taking it to class for my last couple of semesters due to it being so light and compact.
I would recommend this product for anyone that needs laptop capabilities on the go.
I gave it 4 stars because of Win 7 starter. First of all, plan on spending another $35-$70 for the upgrade from starter. The starter is garbage, and if you ask me, win 7 is not that great either. XP is better. Win 7 has all these incompatibility issues, like I am having an impossible time trying to install musicmatch because it is not compatible with win 7. What is up with that? Microsoft going backwards?
The computer itself is great, I may go back to XP or try win 8.
This computer only uses 7-8 watts idling, and about 10-11 watts surfin. This is even more efficient than my Z530 netbook with an SSD drive. I imagine if I put an SSD drive in this computer, I may shave another 1 watt or so.
This computer also stays cool as a cucumber. This is the perfect computer for 24/7 operation.

Didnt end up using this netbook much as it is incredibly slow... Avoid buying it if you need a reasonably quick computer. Even opening a webpage takes ages... Drove me crazy. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Amelia B.
Gave it to my Mom (70) and she loves it! Just surfs and does email basically. Super easy to maintain too.Published 17 months ago by Ward McGuiness
