Here are the "good" and "bad" on this product.

1. I purchased mine for $186, a customer return. Compare this to my previous two Laserjet IIs at $3,600 each and six Laserject 2100s at $600 for one, this was a steal.
.
At this price, this unit is a "throw away." The industry's "rule of thumb" is this: toss it into the garbage if repairs or replacement parts cost more than 50% or $93.
.
2. The 600dpi text print quality was excellent - sharp and clear.
.
3. The print speed was relatively fast - adequate for my needs.
.
4. The unit uses a toner injection system in a bottle. I was able to bulk buy. So, it costs $13.20 to fill the reservoir vs. a $70 cartridge system. Unfortunately, the image drum has to be replaced after 20,000 runs. At $70 for replacement, the toner savings will be negated by this expense. According to my calculations, I will still be ahead by $17.20.

5. The printer is very light in weight.
.
6. I estimate an annual cost of $158.40 for laser printing. Factor a three year life span - this was the average for my old HP Laserjets. Plastic parts get worn, and rubber rollers get dry and smooth. These lead to constant paper jams. Add an annual supply expense of $96.40: four bottles of toner and a replacement image drum. A $13.20 per month for laser printing is cheap.

DISADVANTAGES

1. The instruction sheets are almost useless. I have to access YouTube to learn how to open the upper panel for installing the image drum.

2. The automatic online driver installation was useless. Connection broke several times. As a result, the drivers and updated firmware were downloaded manually.

3. The construction is very cheap. The plastic shell is very thin.
.
4. The paper loading system is very "Mickey Mouse." Instead of a tray, three plastic pieces are loosely fitted together. Furthermore, a single paper feed does not exist. Sheets have to be loaded inside the paper container.

5. Although text printing is excellent, photographs and graphics are below average in quality.

Will not power on after 1 week!

Updated 8/19/2021 (3 stars): Saw the printer power light was off tonight. Went to turn it on and there was no power. The toner light on the right was on, however! I unplugged the power cable and all lights went off. Plugged the power cable back in after a minute - no power. Tried a couple other sockets in different rooms, tried a different power cable, tried unplugged for 15 minutes, held down power for 15 seconds a few times (to drain power), pulled the drum/toner, nothing worked. I bought this used from Amazon Warehouse so I will give this printer a benefit of the doubt and will only subtract 1 star for breaking after only 1 week.

Original review (4 stars): Bought this HP 1001nw b&w laser printer from Amazon Warehouse (Condition: Used - Very Good) and saved $100. It looked 'like new' with all the shipping tapes still intact on the flappy parts. Below is my initial impression after 24 hours:

Pros:
- Awesome toner refill method. Refills are also inexpensive but... it will probably take me 5 years to go through the included toner so I may not even need to refill before the printer dies
- Fast printing
- USB and power cable are included
- Small enough footprint to fit into my cabinet
- Mobile and Windows apps are powerful

Cons:
- No screen on the printer made initial setup harder
- Wi-fi setup is confusing (required a lot of searching and reading to figure out)
- Could not see buttons looking at the dark, flat panel at an angle (printer is in my cabinet)
- Tray cover is weirdly designed - could not be opened, must pull to detach and doesn't show paper inside

Overall, I definitely recommend this printer especially if you can get it used (but came in 'like new' condition)

Worst Printer I've Ever Purchased

I've had this printer for 2 years now and have attempted to use it with 3 different computers, Windows 10, Windows 11, and Mac OS. All 3 were the hardest to get the printer found, installed, and used. The worst thing about this is that they attempted to make this "user friendly" with the "HP Smart" app but failed miserably. I am a computer technician and I work with printers every day but this is the worst piece of junk HP has come out with.

I am someone that will spend hours looking at reviews before buying a product. It's actually ridiculous. But - I think they are important so I rely on good reviews before purchasing something. I will say that I have NEVER had a printer that has been so amazing in my life. I purchased this printer in March 2020. It is now August 2022 and I am just now changing the toner in this thing for the first time! The printer ONLY PRINTS IN BLACK AND WHITE - which I knew before purchasing, so if you want color, this is not the printer for you. It is basically to print documents and that's it. No photos. Just black and white documents. Does it's job exactly as stated. I have not had a jam in this thing. No smearing of ink. It works perfectly! It's got Bluetooth so you can print from phone. Toner is SO EASY to replace. I am just amazed and so happy with this printer! BUY IT! You will not spend a crap ton of money on ink again!!!!!!! A+++++

Super happy with this printer so far. Was a little apprehensive to purchase at first bc of the negative reviews at the top, but glad I did. Needed it for my home office to print documents. Set up was easy & fast, absolutely no issues. Compact printer and has a nice clean look.

Obviously, if you are looking for some crazy quality, this isn’t the printer for you. Comparing to the Sharpe printer at the office, I can definitely tell the prints are somewhat more pixelated if looking really closely. But it does the job perfectly for what I need and the toner capacity + refill cost are a huge plus.

Only thing is I was expecting there to be a toner refill in the package & there doesn’t look like there is one. The product description says 5k pages out of the box, and one toner is only 2.5k so not sure how there are 5k pages. Perhaps it takes 2 toners to fill to full capacity — 5k — and I am misunderstanding?

Looks good. Seemed easy to set up. But setup has to be with the HP Smart App. No matter what I did, the smart app could not find my printer to set it up. I tried to reinstall the HP Smart App. I unplugged the ethernet connection on my computer to make it WIFI only. I accessed the 'help', which always led me back to the Smart App. The printer does not have a screen to override the setup. I am sure the problem would have been rectified if I could have talked or messaged a real tech, but HP would not give that kind of contact or phone number. I got a message that this printer is no longer supported by HP (huh?), even though it showed I still had warranty. After several frustration hours, I gave up and returned the printer.

Now I bought this printer since it was cheap compared to what was avaliable at the time. I was never a big fan of HP to begin with so I never had huge hopes for this printer.
Overall, for print quality I have no complaints. What I have had multiples issues with, was the printer's inconsistent connectivity issues.

The printer uses HP smart to connect to your device, but this app is so buggy and poorly made that either

a) it just sometimes never finds my printer even after multiple attempts at restarting the printer, re-installing the app and restarting my device or
b) it goes halfway through the installation process before the app crashes and I have to restart the entire pairing process all over again SOMETIMES RUNNING INTO PROBLEM a)
c) I paired the printer to the device, I turn the device off, turn it back on and the printer for some reason cannot connect to the device again. The only issue with this would be to remove the link between this device and the printer and relink the device back to the printer ONCE AGAIN SOMETIMES RUNNING INTO ISSUE a) (mostly a PC issue)

Listen. Its cheap, decent quality and reliable when it works properly. The problems I highlighted aren't necessarily common but they've happened more than once in the couple months I've owned the printer. Next time I'll probably not go HP.

It works well enough, haven't any issue getting it to sync with the wifi and my computers. A plus for convenience, the "cartridges" (which are more like syringes) are available as an amazon prime same-day / 2-day shipping and are super easy to use.

Great for convenience of having a printer without the hassle of having to search for compatible/accessible/affordable cartridges. And it can print a BUNCH before needing a refill.

Printing quality is not that good.

I thought I was upgrading from my brother printer but it was a major downgrade. Very noisy printing and loud clanging noises during the process. Take forever to finally print, I don't know why.
Overall a mistake. The brother printer was smooth but was at the end of it's life.
I do not recommend this product.
