Good for the money

I purchased this through Amazon on 11/25/2010 for $520.00 I had a Toshiba 17.5" Satellite Entertainment Laptop. It was heavy. I hardly took it anywhere. I wanted something faster, lighter, better. So I got this. At the time, it was. Here are the current specs:

Model: HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
Rating: 4.3 Minimum
Processor: AMD 2 P540 Dual-Core 2.40 GHz
8G RAM (Came with 4G which I maxed last year).
I take very good care of this laptop. I have a raised fan with three moveable fans, a usb fan (adjustable speed), and another one about the same size that I've spliced together from a broken one. Believe it or not have two 8" Dell speakers (powered by DC) for speakers) and a secondary ACER monitor hooked up to it.
For protection I have AVG, Advanced System Care, Malwarebytes, and Iobit Malware Fighter. Soon I will have had it for three years. I've wiped it twice, only after moving the information I want and to clean up the hard drive. Sure a few viruses have gotten through but nothing scans haven't resolved. Those can get through with a computer being connected to the internet.

Internet: Opens pages quickly. Opens new pages fairly quickly. Switches between the two very quickly.
Plays video very well. I have WMP, QT, and VLC and all work with no problems.
Youtube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime also work without hitch.
I am planning on getting a smart tv and linking my PC to it. We shall see how that goes.
I am also going to purchase an HP Windows 8 laptop in the future and do the same.

This laptop can do more than just surf the internet. With 4G of RAM it will be much slower when doing more than 1 thing. With 8G of RAM this is what I can do at once:

1.Surf the internet
2.Listen to music on Spotify
3.Work with Microsoft Word (I'm a college student.)
4.Convert any ebooks to emobi files for my Kindle Fire.

If I want to do a 5th thing I could but I'm using two screens for a reason. I've had three HP laptops. out of the 5 that I've had. While they weren't the future perfect machines we expect them to be, I prefer HP above all. When I get a new laptop this one isn't going anywhere. It will be a secondary, maybe emergency laptop. Almost any laptop can be a good one; if taken care of and proper antivirus and other protective programs are installed.

I recently purchased this laptop off amazon & I am so glad I did !
Pros: Webcam has tons of fun features similiar to those of macs. It also allows you to webchat in dimly lit rooms. The computer itself runs very smoothly thanks to the processor & amount of memory. I really like the gadgets that you can add to the desktop, they have downloadable ones off their website too.
Cons: Keyboard takes some getting used too. I had a toshiba before and although ive had this laptop a week, Im still having trouble getting used to the keys. Also, I really wish the laptop was lit in the dark.
Overall a really great buy! Especially if you have a lot of music/videos/etc.

Great value for money

I was looking to replace a 5yr old desktop and was split between a laptop and a new desktop. I decided that the spec of this HP laptop was more than adequate for my needs with the added bonus of added portability (some of the 17in screen laptops are huge!) and de-cluttering wires from my desk.
So far, I have not been disappointed. the machine appears to be very good quality and is more than capable for the types of uses I shall be putting it to....compiling home movies, image editing, home office functions and a little gaming.

the only reason I have not given this 5 stars is the usual plethora of junk software installed (easy to remove) and the fact that I am trying to adjust to a slightly offset keyboard (I keep hitting Caps Lock instead of 'a').....very minor points in my opinion that do not really detract from a well built, good performing machine.

Purchased this to use as a multimedia computer for my entertainment center. Primary function is to record television and surf the web via a wireless connection. Have been very pleased with the unit. Only issue was the audio was not coming through the HDMI cable. Called HP Technical support for assistance with this and got an American representative in AZ. That was not a problem with the laptop. I only needed to go into the sound settings and change the default audio output device in Windows 7. Took about 10 minutes to troubleshoot and resolve. Used a Logictech wireless mouse and keyboard to allow me to connect to the laptop from across the room. Works flawlessly. Very, very pleased with my purchase

This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL laptop. In the photos it looks slightly green, but it's the color of champagne. On the lid, on the right side, there is a white light with the letters "hp" and it lights up when you turn on the laptop.

When you first set it up, it's a breeze. Very simple, to the point, and easy. Another plus: it boots very quickly.

The only issue I take with it is the keyboard: it's different from any other one I've ever been on, and I've been on PCs since I was 14 (I'm 25). It take some getting used to, but it's possible. It also is a very sensitive board, so you don't have to type hard. Light is the way to go! :)

Fan died within a week of the warranty period (1 year)

Thankfully I was able to send it back to HP to get it fixed but I literally had a few days to sort it out as it was nearly out of warranty. I'm shocked a fan would die so fast (within the first year).

HP support was so-so. They can't seem to track their returns. I had asked them not to send it back before a certain date because I would be out of town and they agreed to this but they sent it anyway. It got to me just an hour before I was leaving for the airport! Keep a close watch on anything you ship to them! Their trouble ticketing system is totally unreliable and save records of all contact!!!

Don't like the keyboard. Very flimsy and hard to type. I ended up buying another PC because I was worried about the fan and hated the keyboard.

I do love the HDMI output (First laptop I had with this) and the builtin webcam is decent quality ... better than my Lenovo thinkpad (LOTS of issues with that one !)

Now my HP is the family's media center because the keyboard is so frustrating to type on.
