Update: In May 2013 the hard drive died and needed to be replaced. I contacted HP and was asked to return the unit in packaging supplied by HP via FedEx overnight courier service under HP's warranty program. I did exactly as I was told. The package sat in a repair facility in Texas for over a week without any comment from the facility. On the day I was supposed to receive the unit back, I was instead told by the repair facility that my computer was received with a damaged screen! I was also told that the repair facility would not touch the machine until I agreed to pay for the repair of the damaged screen first. The original repair cost for the damaged screen was close to $350; HP was willing to reduce the cost to approximately $200 after I expressed my objections in the strongest terms possible. Bottom line - I did not send HP a computer with a damaged screen and I ended up spending $200 that I would not have had to pay if I had in-home warranty service. Further, I resented the fact that I was not notified immediately of the issue upon receipt in Texas by the repair facility some seven days earlier. I learned a hard lesson - never purchase any computer without in-home warranty repair service. On the basis of what happened, I have to amend my rating to 3 stars. In all fairness to HP, the computer was ultimately returned in excellent condition and it continues to operate optimally since that time.
UPDATE May 2014 - the computer continues to operate optimally since it was repaired for a hard drive failure in May 2013 as previously noted.
the amazon price is better than the ph store...... i have 3 month of use and believe me this laptop is fast.
Saw an HP 17" DV laptop at my local Sam's club, and I've had pretty good luck with HP products. When I checked Amazon, I found this model (dv7-7030us) which had better specs overall than the one at Sam's club, and was about the same price.
Just got it today, and so far I'm very happy with the quality and performance of this laptop.
Pros (for me):
- i7 processor and 8Gb of RAM provide leeway on demanding apps.
- 1Tb hard drive will take me some time to fill up.
- 17.3" screen - graphics may not be as good as the ASUS, but very nice for my needs (I won't be playing games on this system).
- 4 USB ports. Can never have enough.
- Have been using this for several hours now and it runs quite cool (my other laptops are space heaters).
- "beats audio" is better than most onboard laptop audio. To use with Reason, I have this laptop hooked up to an Avid Recording Studio and Logitech Speaker System Z523 with Subwoofer.
- Not too much crapware to deal with out of the box. Setup was easy.
Possible Minuses (for some people)
- The battery pack acts to elevate the laptop to a comfortable ergonomic angle for keyboarding.Read more ›
